Trail & Ultra Running Thread

Potentially if you get the pace right, you almost certainly would have to stop for food or drink unless they have a helper.

160 kms constant running
Nearly four marathons back to back ?!
Insists she doesnt walk one step of it?!?

That does seem strange to me

ā€œConstant runningā€ to an ultra runner is very different to marathon distance or less. She’ll be having a proper stop at all checkpoints and restock on food and water and then carry on at her pace.

But yes, very possible to constantly run. On terrain that allows it.

It’s possible but would depend on the technicality of terrain and the vert. I would say unlikely that she wouldn’t be a ā€˜name’ in the community with skills like that.

When Courtney walks, you’d better believe every other person in that race is walking.

As @FatPom says yes possible depending on the terrain

For example, Thames Path 100 - as flat as you can get without being on a track

Men’s and women’s records above

Even at 16 hours that’s 4x4hr marathons back to back which might leave a bit of time for walking but not much

In the mountains, everyone walks some parts

That’s the whole point
I mentioned feed stations and uphills ā€¦ā€ runs all the way ā€œ

I did think about telling her to FRO and drowning her in the bubbles but I’m not that guy anymore

So its Escape from Meriden this weekend; anyone in?

Jan, plus friends are doing it and I’m on support duties. I don’t need to drop them off at Midnight thank goodness, but will then need to ā€˜find them’ around 4am in deepest darkest Warwickshire. She is hoping for 60 miles this time around which takes her to somewhere around Luton.

Just been reading the guide and I had forgotten that there is an option to be chained together. I think that if Jan and I did this it could end very badly

Yep. Centurion got their 30%.

I’m not in shape to do Hurtwood on Sunday, which I had in mind to get the required distance done before NDW50, and… fuck… actually… well it’s done now, but as I write this I could have sorted my shit out and found something to do as a ā€˜qualifier’.

But, it’s done now; this way I can put in a plan to get to Verbier in July without forcing the NDW50 in too (though there wouldn’t really have been any forcing).

Fuck it. I don’t know. I just need to get some consistency under my belt, and to get myself out of this bastard rut I seem to be in… but that’s not for this thread.

Interesting diagram though I suspect a little depressing. I didn’t realise that there were only 260 places. Or is it that there are 260 places available to the general public.

Seems like a very low number for a race that is 100miles and which not everyone will complete.

Yeah - it’s 369 places for the event overall which makes it feel a bit quaint compared the 2500 that do UTMB

The rest of the spots go something along the lines of:

  • last years top 10 men
  • Last years top 10 women
  • Winners of golden ticket races
  • (Ie top pros who weren’t in the top 10 in the year before)
  • Sponsor slots
  • Volunteer slots
  • Etc

Ah ok, still 369 still seems small. Maybe they are trying to keep the environmental impact low. Otherwise I’m sure they could bump the numbers up. Not exactly short of applicants

They are stuck with 369

The race runs through the Granite Chief Wilderness Area - when this area was designated that year the race had 369 runners in it. As a result of the designation they cannot go above that number.

I think it’s the first 10 miles of the course

The trail run I’m doing tomorrow has been shortened a bit and reduces the ascent\descent as it has taken out the Roseberry Topping climb, this has reduced about 3K and 400m depending on where they turn us round, which could be 20-25 minutes due to the terrain. Seems reasonable as it wouldn’t have been fair on the marshals at the top.

There’s also a chance of another smaller diversion after about 5K but they’ll confirm that tomorrow, not sure why, it’s a bit exposed but I think it’s more likely just going to be almost impossible to get up as it is a very muddy but short climb and there’s a very easy detour.

I’m still planning on going and will just have to man up .:grimacing:

Chris is on the start list for the full distance but not sure if he’s going? It will be a tough effort with the lack of running.

I’m telling myself it can’t be much worse than the 55 a few years ago when we got hit by 2 named storms!

The weather here looks reasonable tomorrow so will be out on the trails with Mrs T

It will be really really wet though underfoot

Yeah I won’t be going. Forgot about it and I’m working this weekend.

Guess I’d have dropped down to the 10 or 21km and had a walk-jog if free. Shame as been hoping to do this event for 15 years. Maybe next year!

I watched the first one of these as well. Clearly I’m not ā€˜serfistikated’ enough because he keeps banging on about the ā€˜awesome views’ and it just looks like more of the same boring AF landscape to me? :man_shrugging:t2:

This one looked much more interesting to me.

The bottom one is the one that I did with Jack in 2022.

This was the film that was shot about one of the runners - Jack spoiled the plot a bit….
