Training - What Training?!

Sounds like a great week Clive!

Rain was (correctly) forecast for this morning so I bumped my planned ride to Sunday. Set my running kit out last night - no pressure to run. But if I woke and felt like it, I said I’d head out. And so I did.

21.8k with 307m elevation.

Set myself a really tough target of 160 bpm cap on the hills and then trying to get back under 150 as much as possible for everything else.

Really chuffed to have snuck under 5 min kms average pace for 151 average bpm.

Encouraging signs

Well I can honestly say I’ve never been hit as hard post Ironman as I have been this time round. I think a perfect storm of fighting illness and fatigue pre race, sleep deprivation and a bike ride from hell mixed with exposure to a few hundred snotty children straight back at work has absolutely bollocksed me.

Monday a bit tired but ok. Tuesday, 12pm onwards body just said no. Completely drained, aching, fever, diarrhoea. You name it I had it. Wednesday, at home resting, same Thursday but feeling better, mistakenly thought I was through it. Thursday night / Friday morning, back to serious visits to the loo. Frustratingly spent the whole of Friday completely done in again. Annoyingly, also seemed to have developed some sort of stye over my left eye. Another night of broken sleep but better. Today actually got some breakfast down me and seem to have a bit more colour about my face, still look pretty gaunt though, I must have dropped a few kgs over the week.

Maybe, maybe just turning the corner so another easy day watching tv planned. Bad timing but friends and their kids are staying with us until Tuesday and my poor Mrs has been in a frenzy getting ready for this and dealing with our three cherubs.

I might just be at a stage where I could start to trust a fart again. Don’t want to push it though

Sounds grim
Rest up and get well soon.

Probably just the realisation that your next race means competing with me. Your body has done the sensible thing and gone into a complete flap to try to convince you to give in already. Listen to your body. Concede.

On a more serious note, that does sound grim mate. Hope the signs of recovery ate genuine. Once you can get a bit of good into you then you’ll perk up pretty quickly I’d wager. Athletically may even benefit from the week of total rest.

Sounds fun, @Adam. Keep resting and hope you’re feeling better soon.

100kms for me today, with a few hills thrown in. No food in the house so I went out on a breakfast of a packet of crisps, so started feeling ropey, quite quickly. I’ve entered a 300km audax in 2 weeks, so employing a bit of an inverse taper and will try to get some bike time in my legs, this week.

Started my return to exercise, recovery lifting 15mins and recovery trail run 20mins.

I’m aiming to just get back to regular exercise rather than train for something.

See if I can maintain my low resting HR, high HRV and longer sleep.

Another swim.

Will need to change my name to Billy the Fish at this rate.

Tldr - did 82 km on the tt bike. 1250m elevation. 209ap 230np. Got rained on big time.

I got up nice and early (as needed to back in time for junior parkrun) for a crack on the tt bike. Wish I hadn’t! :joy:

I’m calling it a learning opportunity, and the reason why we do these tests weeks before the race!

1 - Bta aero bottle thing just doesn’t fit. Tried it anyway as the bts bottle holder I have doesn’t fit the Selle Italia saddle that I swapped onto the bike for this ride - hated the Giant one, so grabbed the one that came with my Canyon. I probs got a max of 150ml out of it! Luckily had my down tube aero bottle with a few hundred extra mls.

2 - front brakes rubbing. Spotted before I set off. Thought I’d fixed it. But there was a much smaller rub evident when I got home. No idea how much this impacted the ride. Probs not at all. :joy:

3 - back brake is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Seriously considered not even starting my ride. But risked it anyway.

4 - garmin mount is totally bodged, as there’s no room for it anywhere else. Will need to get a different type of mount. Turned out it was much more in the way than I’d realised. Practically had to break my wrist trying to change gear. Got a callous forming on my hand from the constant rub.

5 - finally got going. F**king hated it for the first hour. All these things, combined with the crap roads and harsh ride. I was not enjoying myself. Speed was shit. Legs were shit. Head was shit. Wasn’t a happy bunny.

6 - @stenard mentioned in another thread that a 30t may be a good idea for Wales. Yeah, I’ll give you that. Had to grind up in my 27 today. Doable, but not conducive to decent running legs afterwards!

7 - started to just embrace the shittiness and got used to it. Fog about 25km in so thick I could barely see 50m in front. Got a bit nervous. Luckily it was early Sunday am.

8 - saddle came loose. Couldn’t fix it until the 3rd attempt. Was like a see saw slowly tipping to the floor, then I shift my weight and it works it’s way to the sky. Ironically (mostly) fixed it outside a bike shop. It was obviously closed, but a long skinny screwdriver would’ve sorted it in seconds.

9 - started to absolutely chuck it down. By this point I’d perked up a bit and just chuckled to myself.

So a few lessons learned. Lots of messing about with the cockpit required. Need a new hydration system of some sort. Need to consider options.

Also a massive dose of reality, really laid thick - I had hoped to be able to go near a 6hr bike leg. Ain’t no chance sonny on that form. Higher power than I probs should be entertaining, for only 28.5kph. Expectations adjusted.

Sorry - needed a bit of a rant to clear it from my head

Not that it helps but I’m in shit state too.

Wales is going to be a grim, grim day preceded by a few weeks of grim training. But after that I’m getting drunk so it’s not all bad news :grinning:

That sounds rough mate but you had a lot happen on one ride. Now you know the issues just address them on at a time. I’m sure I’ve got an X-Lab torpedo BTA holder somewhere with a regular bottle cage on it. You’re welcome to try it?

The difference between a 27 and a 30 I find quite dramatic for climbing.

Protect those run legs !

Another 30 minute spin class this morning.

Hopefully the hamstring / it band will pass a short run in the morning. :crossed_fingers:

Which answer do you want?

It was a character building ride in rough conditions and highlighted a few things to get right on your bike that should be fairly easily fixable.

Or…

Man up, buttercup! I did about 6:05 on a Cannondale Slice with a Hed3\Disc and 39/27 when I was your age in crap conditions including a small crash with 2 walls! Then ran a 3:32 marathon  (admittedly it was probably about 1K short) but long before Nike shoes existed, and most of today’s aero bike toys.

Seriously, a 30T will allow you to spin a bit more but time on hills is key, I remember driving the course the days before and wondering how on earth I was going to get up a couple of the climbs!

I still think a bladder down your top will help massively, better still if you can hand it off at some point.

You’ll have had about 8 more weeks of training, taper will help you feel fresh. For you it’s all about the bike training, you’re the guy that rocks up at midnight and does a trail ultra off naff all training or rides home from London

Long ride for me today, ~150K with 850M ascent in just under 5 hours, AP 193W which seems higher than it felt and I’ll probably feel that tomorrow  didn’t feel that wasted although there were a couple of quick food stops and to catchup with the cricket score!

Just over 13 hours for the week which was pleasing, 10 on the bike, just over 2 swimming. Sadly, although I did about 9K running that’s going to be very restricted for a couple of weeks I think. Hopefully I’ll get some progress with my massage tomorrow as she is a qualified physio.

Back at work so fitting more in will be a challenge, not sure what I do with my time, especially compared to all of you with kids and longer commutes!

Plan is to keep the cycling up so I’ll have some level of fitness when the hamstring settles down. Got my eye on a couple of 100M TT’s and\or a long sportive.

Probably this tbh!

 :joy:

The bladder I have been thinking about a lot. Would get me a good half way through, can then switch to on course stuff. I just worry that people think I’m doing it for the aero gainzzzz. :joy:
