63.4km - 6hrs - 4 runs (15, 16, 18 & 13 ish) with 2,213m of elevation. 1600m of that in the 18km run. Last night’s run was also a bit harder than planned as i really didn’t even want to get out the door. Forced myself out and just ended up buliding and buliding into a prog effort. So 13.6 km at 4.10/km average with almost 200m climbing.
The Thursday session really hit me hard. I’ve still got residual DOMS this Monday morning, and it really took it out me from an energy perspective. Don’ thtink the busy end of the week with work and then the early signs of a cold (thanks kids) are helping though. As i mentioned above, bit of a weird foot niggle yesterday. I have had similar before, so massaged the crap out of it last night and going to forgo today’s run to watch the Wales game instead to give it a day rest. Should hopefully be fine then.
Got another tasty trail run planned for Thursday, but this one will be a much more social, and steady, affair.
Have formal sign off from upstairs as well now for a 100km (actually more like 110) on 11/12 October. It’s a pretty spikey elevation profile, with about 3.5k climb. Not planning to race it though, so it’ll just be a long overnight session on the feet.
One thing I’ve found is that last year and up to my two ultras in June and July, I was pretty good a logging my totals in a XLS. After that, I just seem to do bits here and there. I think I’m averaging about 6hrs per week, not including races but for me, it seems that logging this stuff makes me more accountable to myself, even if don’t have a solid plan.
3 Swims - 2 Pool & probably last OW of the season.
4 Bikes - Including 1 Brick (+4 days commuting - 44km)
2 Runs - 1 very short as part of brick so a bit down on running this week.
I keep a spreadsheet as well and it’s not so much filling it in that motivates me, but not filling it in. That gap on a certain day when I did nothing stares at me for posterity.
With me and now you, maybe it is just time of the year!
I initially wondered the same, but on reflection, I think a hard 5k, and those shoes, might have just exacerbated the issue. They definitely didn’t cause it. I had the tiniest bit of pain in that same area either Thursday or Friday (and was loosely aware of it during the jog down to parkrun start - not in the vapors) , and those two runs had been the zoom fly and some hokas (both of which I’ve worn numerous times over the past year with no issues).
I think it might have been the back to back sessions with hills. The way I describe the pain about being “deep” in the ankle, almost the base of the tibia, kind of aligns with how the two hilly sessions could have resulted in some excessive braking forces going through the ankle joint when running downhill. I hardly ever run hills, so back to back session where my coach put some in (the second one was actually only 80 steady on the flat, but with 8xhill sprints towards the end) is the only actual change
1 marshalling at a tri which was excellent motivational/inspritational training (I sometimes need reminders why I have to have beer/chocolate/biscuit/general shit food free days!).
I have some 32mm gravel tyres on my Endurace, so I took that off-road yesterday, on a selection of bridleways. It was wet, so they were struggling for grip (not very aggressive tread like a CX tyre) and I was bouncing all over the place trying to pick to best line…but it was fun. Went through a ford at one point. I reckon I might just squeeze some 35s in those chainstays.
I am not one of those people who claims to never ride a nice carbon bike in the wet; the only pain is cleaning it all properly afterwards! Those integrated cockpits are a devil for trapping water, and I will have to strip it and drop the fork out after every wet ride to keep the headset in good order I think.
A few short easy runs to and from the pool with one tempo-ish 5k. Really found it hard getting to the pool recently so felt good to get 3 swims in. Decent mileage and time spent on saddle but again mainly easy. Was due to race a 50 mile tt on Sunday but had to scrap that. Life/family just has to come first sometimes. Managed to get out for an hour later in the day and did a couple of 10 minute efforts at around 300 watts.
Need to get the tt bike packed up into the bike box before flying out to Portugal. Hopefully can get a recce in of the hilly bit of the Cascais 70.3 route in on Friday!
Then spend next week lying down drinking beer in the sun
Just curious, is anyone a member of an athletics club? I’d like to structure my running but if I’m honest, I get a bit bored running on my own with the same old routes. I’m thinking some company might be good, especially in winter.
Winchester athletics club has a Senior running section which seems to have a busy schedule.
I run with a run club but only for equavialent of a weekend cafe ride. Is generally a social 10k run a lot slower than my IM pace but a nice way to put in easy distance, especially if jog there and back. Nice chat without realising I’ve done a long run,or had to think about route etc.
Sorry, training peaks not meant for 1/2M prep but as a sign I’m somewhat ready to start thinking about next season tri. Have been given it to work together with a coach.
@Matthew_Spooner plus one for GB questioning marathon. You’ve shown all year you’re clearly capable of performing back to back events, more than anyone else would advise normally. BUT there is still a risk next year/year after you’ll be wondering why your not performing at same level.
x3 runs. Just bloody loving running again. 1 easy 45 mins, 1 interval session, 1 longer run at 8 miles. I’ve got the Royal Parks Half marathon in 3 weeks’ time, so building gradually towards that.
x1 swim, doing some shorter intervals.
x1 bike, not including some very short commutes. I was meant to do the same 50 as @Adam but got absolutely slaughtered the night before celebrating the wife’s birthday. I was still feeling pretty rubbish when I headed out for my run in the afternoon, but can’t say I regret it.
Slightly bigger week coming up and a swim CSS test.
i got into running via tri! I joined the local running club for that very reason - had no structure to my tri run training and wanted to improve over the winter. But then i ended up turning into a full time runist!
Must have been alright. Pat put just about a minute into him. 3rd place was way off though. Gutted really. We would have had a dry ride with our early starts too
Cheers mate, sounds good. I think I will give it a whirl. It probably varies from club to club but I can’t see anywhere where it states that the sessions are part of the membership fee, or paid on top?
Yeah I’m a member of the local running club and it’s an amazing way to develop a good group of runners to motivate you and push you on. Most clubs have a wide range of abilities so there’ll always be someone to train with, and the regular track/speed sessions are an amazing way to improve. Plus they’re good fun.
My running club were involved in the Southern 6 stage road relays yesterday at Crystal Palace park - 6 legs of 5.5k with the top 25 teams qualifying for the National Road Relays in a few weeks. The atmosphere was really cool despite the shite weather and having team mates out on course to shout at you is really motivational. Finished just outside 18 mins for the 5.5k, which I’m pretty happy with given there’s a decent hill on each of the 2 laps - https://www.strava.com/activities/2731254973
