Replying to my own thread but re-read the race guide and I’d doesn’t mention cutting off Morte Pt. I was getting confused with another section.
Wow, that’s pretty dicey at night, plus some other sections are extremely close to the edge of a 100mtr drop onto the rocks.
@gingerbongo how did you cope with this at night, very slowly I imagine?
I’m pretty used to running difficult terrain in the pitch black to be honest, so it doesn’t phase me. Clearly i wouldn’t have been moving that fast, simply due to the fact that i was pacing a 110km run.
I just created a segment around the headland to the lighthouse for a point of reference for you. I’ve got a memory of reaching the lighthouse, which was pretty cool, but obviously the night time sections just sort of roll into one in my head!
I covered the 4.3km in 30 mins, which was 7.00/km. Which isn’t bad going actually, as it’s very lumpy as you know. I was still feeling pretty fresh coming out of Wooly. Looking at the stats, i was still way under 5.00/kms on the flatter bits and the descents. So yeah, not really hanging around (can’t remember how technical it was on that bit).
My 2 big dips of the run were coming into Combe Martin, as i’d lost a water bottle and had taken a bad detour (got a bit lost!). Secondly was the section just before Lynmouth where i got myself all lost again a couple of times. Bad combo of sleep deprivation and my maps not downloading properly on Viewranger (i’d set them to download for offline use - but the blimmin thing didn’t work and i had no signal. Had i had the map, i would’ve quickly worked out what i was doing!).
Cheers mate, wow that’s shifting. For reference, I was 2.5 hrs from Puts to Lee but that was via Potters Hill and with my mistakes. I can’t believe that pace over that section at night.
Unless we meet at the starts, safe to say we’ll never see each other at a race.
I nearly went wrong at Lynmouth, I was heading straight on and a fellow racer could me back and we headed down the zig zag path.
Hmm, legs definitely said no in today’s track session. I had a feeling they would as they were still tired yesterday and today from Tuesday’s jaunt in the hills (that i run a fair bit quicker and harder than i’d planned - also really poor recovery after it, and dehydrated, which i always find extends my muscles recovery time).
Anyway, set out to do 4 x 1600 at tempo pace, as i didn’t feel like there was any speed there. Ended up all over the place!
2 x (2 x 1600, 2r) 4R.
Fast, not fast, TMP, Tempo
5.27 (3.23/km), 5.40 (3.31/km), 6.25 (3.59/km), 6.02 (3.44/km)
Was really slowing on the 2nd mile, after going out too fast for the first. Was ready to throw in the towel, but decided to turn it into a 2 sets of 2 session instead. Gave myself some more recovery and planned to run at mara pace instead. Ended up being quicker than that, so the legs got a decent enough workout still.
That’s 3 track sessions in 4 weeks now, so seem to be moving towards consistency. Kids going back to school should mean an increase in overall mileage, so a few weeks more of building base.
I’ve also done 4 bike rides today of about 7.5km each. One to track and back, and another in my flip flops to the pub to meet up with some mates over a few beers.
Surf was pretty flat, even for the Barney barges, so we hit the trail to Woolly via Potters Hill. LO wanted to buy a fridge magnet for her Granny.
She’s also not very used to eating ice cream!
The bike results were pretty crap and after a rest day I was hoping for more, the swim was the only the second time we’re I managed a 52:… 52:56 but hey….
