Trans Continental Race 27th July 2025

Loved Matt’s morning video today - not sure I’d be able to talk to anyone on a 15% climb

Fucking pissing with rain today. Motivation is low! Plan is try and get to Bosnia but we’ll see how we go. In hindsight we should have dropped down lower last night. Genuinely CP2 Parcours was nowhere near as bad as we thought. Not that much gravel and just a 10% 5km climb. Which while nasty was just boring to grind up.

This is such a great picture. We are both in hysterics alot of the time. Everyone else is usually quite sombre and this was exactly one of those moments.

Also I’m clearly way to muscley to be a cyclist :joy:

Bit late to this thread but it’s utterly bonkers! Been following Matt on Strava, and now think Sowler’s partner is an honorary member of TT!

Keep it going :sunglasses:

#132 is taking it leisurely.

Sowler nearly to Zagreb.

Matt looks to be having a monster day, only 20 or so miles north of Split. Must have done over 100 miles already

Really enjoying the Insta updates @Matthew_Spooner, @Sowler and Sarah. You’re all doing amazing , what an adventure you’re all having

As per his insta update, Matt is well past Split now, half way down the Dalmatian Coast.

Interesting that a huge chunk of riders have chosen a route through Bosnia & Herzeggovia

A couple of days ago, Matt said that the route through Bosnia was the default from Komoot. I think his route is a bit further but he thought he might get cooler temperatures and more breeze.

He had another massive day yesterday, 225 miles and 3600m ascent. Looks like he’s away early again today, I guess CP3 would be the aim, if not further?

I dipped in and out less yesterday but noticed how the riders around him are riding far more hours. Matt overtook 265 and 81 yesterday but they obviously rode through the night as they’re again ahead.

more like tortoise and the hare, sleep well and keep moving at a greater average speed or progressively get slower as fatigue kicks in.

This whole thing has made me revisit JOGLE for my 50th next year. Its an itch that needs scratching, and why not next year.

LEJOG is firmly on my retirement list too (I cannot imagine starting at JOG).
IT’s part of a long and growing list:

  • West coast of Scotland, back through Western Isles
  • North Sea coastal route
  • Round Wales Mk2
  • WW1 / WW2 battlefields and other historic sites in France / Belgium

This week a ride across Europe has been added to the list

A lady I coached did the NC500 a couple years back which looked excellent (it was a tour that missed out the A9 with a slightly more central detour with highlandtransfers.com)

Its downhill all the way  I thought logistics would be easier to start in Scotland as JOG is a little more remote than Lands End and better when fresh to navigate to?

LEJOG is the standard direction because of the predominant SW wind I would have thought

Its #sciencefact that whatever way I cycle it will be into a headwind.

But everyone knows it’s downhill going north to south

Matt trucking on south of Dubrovnik this morning hot on #81s heels, bet that coastal road they’re taking down Croatia is easy on the eye (#265 is off into the mainland)

Sowler making good progress through Bosnia

Won’t make CP3 today. It’s f’ing hot earlier 43 degrees now 37 after a sea breeze kicked in. Traffic has been terrible from Dubrovnik. Planning to get to Bar tonight for an early stop
