Virtual Zwift Rides

I changed the channel on my router this morning and did a test connect to Zwift in the garage. (no riding). Seems absolutely fine.

We get absolutely no issues with wifi range in the house but I know my iPhones crap out in the garage. I get 3 out of 5 dots on the Apple TV.

Think I might invest in a powerline extender just to be sure. Anybody use one?

Can’t make it either, got a massage until 6.

Yes I have a WiFi extender that plugs into a 240v socket. We need it because of thick stone walls + 3 storey house.

It mostly works ok, but does drop out here and there. Occasionally like yesterday I get a “limited” or “connected, no internet” message.

Run an ethernet cable if you can do it, powerline isn’t great for realtime stuff, every time the fridge motor triggers on there’s loads of intereference in your power line and drop outs are possible - fine for tritalk, crapper for games, although zwift should be able to deal with it better than a shooting game (you just accellerate back to where you were if the drop outs hadn’t happened) but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t at the moment.

I use a powerline-to-ethernet cable adapter in the garage. It means my phone isn’t connected on the same network for the Companion App; but no biggy for me.

i have used one the whole time i’ve had Zwift (since April or so this year) and i’d say it’s been fine for 99% of my rides. I can only think of 2 in that whole time where i had a dropout.

Can’t run a cable, due to timber framed house and multiple rooms and there is no real way to get another cable into the garage without running across doors.

It doesn’t need a massive boost, like I say, tried this morning and all is well. It just needs a bit of a helping hand.

Does the powerline extender have its own network ID then? I would have thought you’s still be on the same network but in the case, I guess that means Zwift game and Zwift app must both be on wifi?

The powerline I’m looking at has wifi at the terminating end as well as physical plug in. (I was assuming I’d use the plug in capability).

I rarely use the app either, so no big deal.

A real DIY enthusiast like you???
Get that virgin cable running back out of the house, dig up your patio and drive, proper pneumatic drill job, then run the cable under that.
Relay the patio and tarmac the drive.
Hey presto!
Cat5 cable in the garage :joy:
Just make sure to use tubing and include a blue pull rope inside it :+1:t3:

I got enough crap on the outside of the house. Virgin cable, a flue that we don’t use and metres os copper pipe for the emergency vent on the Megaflo system.

Don’t need anything else!

That’s why my solution is so good!
Because it would not be on the outside.
(Well apart from shadowing the entry cable a few cm down)
You’ve just got to dig everything up!!!

(I am of course joking!)

Yeah, laptop gets Ethernet (home) Internet, my phone uses 4G in the garage (no wiFi signal obvs). I did once run Zwift on 4G on my phone (unlimited data), but it was crap on that size screen!

If you use a cable into the powerline adapter, you’ll be the same as me, with the added bonus of a WiFi signal should you wish to use your phone in game too. Tbh, I bought the non WiFi adaptors by accident

I found with the power line adapters I was getting 8-16 meg, and not the 78 meg speed I usually get!
So I just stopped using them.

I can’t get more than 20 anyway, so no loss in POWAAAA for me on the adapters!

Well, I ain’t gettin’ no megs through 2 x 22" stone walls!

Do you use WiFi adapter, or can you get a signal from the router?

21st century has been slow coming to Dorset too

I get 15 megs in the living room next to the hub and 0.5 megs in the attic above the extender. Our house’s wiring is a world of mystery - we have two ring mains circuits and 2 consumer units and they serve random rooms. At one stage it was a surveyors office, at one stage a boarding house, then it got divided in 3 and then made back into 2 houses again. So :man_shrugging:

I did use adapters, but found the signal from the router was stronger, so went back to direct WiFi.
Router is in the room above and across one.
Signal is fine.

I have used tethered 4G in the garage before which just about worked, even with discord.

Now got a homeplug which does have it’s moments now and again, bigger problem is devices trying to retain it’s connection to the SSID between the house and garage.

Not sure about how much lag though. There is a lag column in zwiftpower but not totally sure what it means? Only seen a handful of people with values and they tend to be in seconds by the look of things.

And then do it all again in 6 months when you realise you should have gone Cat6e
