Pet Shop Boys Always on my Mind is a great cover.
I agree that a good cover has to go in a different direction to the original.
To that end, Fine Young Canibals - Ever Fallen in Love stands out.
Of course if you can take a cover and make it one of your signature songs, then that takes things up to another level entirely.
