Back on the topic of Wurf…but only the race he did on Saturday.
The guy who was first out of the water at a blistering 1:09/100m seemed to have been led around by the SUP.
To me, that seemed dodgyAF.
But also, no OW swim is the same. For a start, how do you make it exactly 3.8km with tides, currents & swells. So I don’t think they should be directly compared, almost to the extent of comparing bike courses.
I just think Alistair doesn’t have the results that drive this to move him higher up. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t swim with Frodo and Amberger off the front. I’m guessing he will bike with Frodeno but once Wurf catches them I don’t know what will happen after that.
Yes, this will be a critical moment in the race. If AB goes with Wurf, I think he’ll implode on the run. More interesting, will be to see what Frodeno choses to do.
The question I have is how far off the front will Cam swim? He swam 46:x in Italy, which is going some. But it looks to have been a super fast swim with the best being a 44:30!
He came out with Tim Don in Italy, who beat him by 30 odd seconds at Kona last year (c3mins off Amberger). And that was with TD only just coming back from his horrendous injury the previous year. In all podcasts at that time, Tim was saying how he could hardly turn his neck to breath still. So I’m guessing Tim has improved since last year, and therefore for Cam to be swimming with him, says he’s made a significant further jump.
In 2016, Tim swam in the same pack as Frodo, so if he’s broadly recovered his swim back to those levels, you could have Cam coming out with the main Frodo/AB group, or only a small distance behind. If that happens, it’s fireworks straight out of T1
What might help is that it’ll probably be the first time AB is in a race where he’s not feeling like the alpha biker, Wurf is, so he might be able to park the ego/competitive side/point proving and ride within his limits (which are obviously high).
Alternatively, he might be able to ride with Wurf, which would definitely give anyone else around food for thought. It’d be a brave man (but sensible) man who lets AB down the road, despite the high chance of a blow up. Certainly adds an interesting dynamic.
Interestingly Wurf swam the effectively same time as Molinari in Italy, who was 3 min faster than him in Kona last year. Amberger swam 3:50 faster last year but said he was going to take it much easier than before. With Frodo and Alistair to ride with he might fancy pushing on?
There’s always the weather to take into account with the state of the sea, winds on the bike and temperature and humidity as well. Should be good.
Can’t wait. There are so many ways it can unfold and fingers crossed no drop outs yet.
Love to see Kienle and AB on the podium.
Good pint re AB not being alpha male on the bike, ironically his 70.3 defeat may also help in that he’ll know he can’t ride the field off his wheel. A humble, smart AB could make top 5, an AB who attempts to lead gun to tape would be walking out of the energy lab with Lionel😀
It all looked teed–up for major fireworks last year, but LIONel and Sebi were completely off the boil, and of course Jaaan pulled out. Every year somebody has an off year, but it would be great to see a ding-dong strategic battle on the bike, with all to play for on the run.
So who of the (top-10) contenders is likely to be chasing after the swim? Kienle, Sanders & Skipper? Is Joe going to be on his ‘own’ after the swim?
