That can be true for sure but particularly in Perth, there are a lot of days you can’t go out due to heat (and flies). It’s why a lot of the houses have complete blockout shutters on them, which make your place look like a dodgy flat roof pub.
I’ve bailed more rides due heat in Sydney than I ever have due to cold here. But on the whole, there is a lot more ‘casual’ outdoors stuff going in like impromptu camping or Fri/sat beach barbies etc
I think if you are of a mind to be the outdoors type, you will make it work here or there. I do know of countless stories where families moved there thinking there kids would suddenly change and once settled in, they are still glued to the Xbox etc.
It’s a lovely country but in the end, just another first world one with its own first world problems.
I like it there, I like it here, just eternally grateful we all have two passports and have the choice, even if circumstances don’t always allow. We can’t leave our daughter a huge pile of money but at least she has that option when she needs it.
@gingerbongo has called me out on the book of faces…
…seems like it might be time to knock the seconds off the “milestones” that are hanging around my current LTS running PBs…not sure I can get anywhere close to that 10km time now!!! I ran a 36:34 in 2019 with no specific training, but another 95s? Hmm…
the 5km one also looks massively out of reach, as does the stingy timekeepers mile.
Main (not sure whether to call them A races)
2/5 Southern Upland 50 mile ‘ultra’
4/7 Tri Extreme
C2C2C on a road bike (sub-24 hour heh heh, godda have belief!) weather permitting sometime early in the year
One of those long swims, 10k Windermere sometime
Other stuff
Starman (night) Tri Aviemeore
Scottish Hill Races
Maybe another ultra or tri
That’s it, of course all depending upon whether the battered and bruised (soon to be 56) temple can cope with the alternate cardio/core and strength regime.
About time I posted here. 1 target for 2020, wrapped up in 3 events. It’s all about finding out if I want to train for long distance.
Marathon. Gloucester Marathon; 2:57. 4th marathon in 15 years. Jury is still out on whether I enjoy training for marathons, but suspect it will not be another 5 years before the next one.
100mile TT. Did a few TTs last year and I’ve done a fair few century rides in the past, but never a century TT. We shall see how I get on with longer weekend rides and resolving my nutrition issues.
Dart 10K swim. Of all the endurance events, a long swim is the one thing I thought would never interest me. But I’ve been enjoying my swimming more over the last few years, I’ve been down the Dart on a raft before so why not swim?
So by September I will either be fully onboard this long course lark or looking longingly at the sub-17 5K thread. Then to decide on what to target in 2021 to mark half a century on this planet.
There’s a reason I won’t do an Ironman every year; the training just becomes a chore for me; mainly the long solo rides on the TT bike at silly o’clock on a Sunday.
You should defo do it though; otherwise you’re not a fully-badged triathlete init
No problem with those long solo rides, however, normally it is not an issue to find someone to ride with. It is all relative to where you live; even in the UK, places like the New Forest have some great long rides
Last year my focus was 70.3, this year everything is focused on IM. I am giving it my absolute best shot, I don’t think that I will focus on a single event to this degree again. I thought I was training hard last year, however, it’s at a whole new level this year
But IM is a solo ride, so at some point you need to do solo training rides. Fine having company for a lot of it, but once your out on the TT doing IM pace sessions it’s surely less social.
I’ve snuck in via legacy, having notched my 12 chasing KQ with a few near misses (3mins, 6mins, 8mins, 11mins and a ‘Jonny Brownlee’ at mile 19 when in the mix at Cozumel).
Have some work to determine exactly how to reach the sub 11 so it may be aspirational however I have 2 sub 10 IMs. Initial guesses:
Swim 1:10 I’m usually 1:05 but am trying to up the swim game this year, I reckon Kona will be 7-8 mins slower than a usual IM swim for me.
Bike 5:30. Decentish TT er - 53 mins for 25 miles, 3:55 for 100 miles and I’ve run fairly well off a sub 5 IM bike leg Florida/Barcelona. This will be hugely conditions dependent but should be doable without having over biking.
Run 4:00. I’ve done 14 IM Maras and only Cozumel’s heat explosion was over 4:00. Some of these have been tough, 5 x Wales, Forestman, 2 x Bolton, super hot run in Frankfurt, very warm runs Florida, Barca, Italy. Most runs were 3:4x, with 2-3 3:3x and similar 3:5x. Kona run is different gravy to even these, but if I haven’t overbiked and have a good plan to manage heat and humidity then 4:00seems doable.
That gives 20 mins for T’s and contingency.
It will be different racing a plan to execute a time rather than to podium and KQ.
If the wind gets up it can be tough (Legacy go off in the last wave so we’ll get the worst of the wind) and lots of folk say the heat and humidity means you need to dial the bike back a bit even from your usual IM intensity.
