2020 UK Middle distance races

Ripon innit?
My daughter is going to Whitby from that weekend until the bank holiday, so makes it all nice and easy for me (although a bit boring for my wife! :see_no_evil:)

Waiting to see about pools, as I’m not enetering a non-competitive race unless it’s Helvellyn (challenge in that is just bloody finishing!)

Yes, at the racecourse. Have done the other Ripon tri there a few times. Bike isn’t flat though.

Helvellyn is a doddle, if you can get up and down hills

It’s quite a good offer. I’m thinking of it, but the fact it’s probably not going to be an official race is putting me off.

Numbers and chips…!

ITS A RACE!

Do you know the course…?!

I might have a drive up there with him … if it’s a nice bike you never know…

Half or full for you ?

I’m sure when everyone starts it will be a race even if results aren’t officially recognised or however the BTA are phrasing it.

I know bits of the route but didn’t look at the course in too much detail TBH, but could probably find my way round bits of it. I think the roads might be a bit better than people think, not a European drag strap though. It’s not flat, think it’s something like 900m of ascent on each lap.

Similar with the run, some of it is on grass or track which hopefully will be dry as it will sap your legs a bit, but it’s a nice area though.

If I do enter it would only be the 70.3.

Thanks.

I wouldn’t expect it to be Deva fast but don’t want tri x terrain either.

See how I feel after the weekend

Anyone in for the Gauntlet at Hever castle late September?

I had two cracks at it in 2018, more than enough for me. Good luck.

I’ve done it twice. Great race in good weather. Can’t think of much worse in bad weather, like it was in 2018 ( and last year judging by reviews…almost like late September is dodgy weather-wise!). Run section was laughable the course was so cut up, 6 inch mud in sections. But still ranks as one of my best achievements, just to finish the bloody thing. Had to have a marshal haul my bike gloves off mind. So cold on those descents. Think it was 9 degrees C even before the wind chill. Enjoy!!

Yeah my garmin had that day between 2 and 4°C for the ride. I couldnt feel below my waist when I dismounted.

Its a tough bike course in fair weather, and has some nice bits as does the run.

Thanks for the info…I think…any UK race in September could go either way, potential for scorching Indian summer or bloody awful it all adds to the fun…now I think about it any UK race anytime has the potential to be scorchio or freezing torrential conditions.

A few years ago the Concept Weymouth event was roasting hot one year and hypothermic the next and I think that was June. Great race transition in the tennis courts…(swings lantern and pulls up a sandbag)

Decided to go for the Helvellyn Tri! How technical is the run up to the summit?

I’m possibly going to do the bike & run on Friday.

A lot of the run is ok, just a bit relentless. Then flattens for about 1k, last few hundred metres turns into a proper scramble.

Run down is nice but will smash your quads if you aren’t used to descending.

Ah nice, let me know how it goes. Have you done it before? I watched a video and it looks good. Hopefully not too windy.

Yes, done it about 5 or 6 times.

The water is usually very cold.

Went to enter Helvellyn this morning, looks like they’ve stopped taking entries again.

@Chriswim I entered last week, and the current entries have gone as well. I’d say the entry site is having problems, it’s not the greatest system. Try it later or maybe get in touch with Trihard and ask if it’s broken? I haven’t seen anything saying they’ve stopped entries.

Quote form the Covid update page of their wevsite:
14/07/2020
In view of the latest British Triathlon update for event organisers we have decided to suspend entries to all events while we carefully consider whether it is feasible for a small company such as Trihard to be able to undertake the massive extra administrative burden and expense needed to make our events fully covid compliant. I thank you for your patience while we do this, but we find ourselves in a continually moving target situation.

Which seems at odds with their Facebook page.

Thanks, I’d missed that update, although they did say if it gets cancelled we’d get a full refund.
