2020 UK Middle distance races

I spy a few ex-TTers on there, too.

No @Toyota_Crown as of yet…

…you know that this and ADITL were two of the TT1.0 get-togethers?

Wife approved it…nowhere available for under £400 that takes dogs, so a drive up on the day for me.
If I enter…my wife then saw how many people have died on Helvellyn…

This lad seems to have his gears wrong

Whereas this chap seems to be taking his bike for a nice walk:

That first one is my Wrecsam Tri climate who was 2nd last year…the one that broke the UK Everesting record a couple of months back.

He’s not a bad climber.

Hence the wink
I’d checked the results out and seen his time.

results from year-to-year seem to be all over the place…damn British weather

He’s entered again this year, but is getting over a broken collar bone which needed pinning so he’ll have managed even less swimming than most of us by race day.

Get entered, I’m sure more people have died sitting on the toilet

No, it goes up Swirral Edge to the RHS of the Tarn, that’s it in the pic.

I’d echo @Doonhamer sentiments. Get yourself entered.
Although Helvelyn wasn’t my first tri it was certainly the one that caused the penny to drop in terms of my understanding what tri can and should be about.
I was lucky in that I had great weather each of the three years I did it.
It’s a race that makes sense. Swim at the bottom of the mountain, ride around the mountain, run to the top and back. Nothing standard about the distances and enough variables to ensure you’re enjoying yourself and having an experience rather than watching the clock.
I’d consider entering again myself if it weren’t for the Covid weight gain and my commitment to taking advantage of the opportunity to sleep in for a year rather than feeling the internal pressure to train

This was my last time at Helvellyn in 2018, quite a poor race really for some reason. About 10 minutes off my best on the bike. Although I struggle at the start of the bike due to the cold from the swim.

And sorry for the picture of the blister on the run :joy:

Cheers :+1:t3:

After seeing Swirral Edge and the death reports, my wife isn’t so keen now…I’ll give her a week to come around.

@Adam - Judging by Jeff’s swim time and what I’ve been doing recently, I reckon on bumbling around at 1:40/100m, so I’ll put down 26 minutes? If I enter :smiling_imp:

Looks like this could be the TT race of the year

Negotiations are going well. Plan not yet finalised

I reckon I’d put 28 minutes for the swim

You enter first and let me know, I’ll put three minutes quicker than you so you can catch me and pass me on the bike.

I’ll then haul 80kg of paid-for Dad-bod past you (hopefully!) somewhere on Helvellyn.
I used to be immense at running DOWNhills :see_no_evil:

Look at the top 50 for the full descent :flushed:

On both your bike & run, it’s got you racing alongside my good mate Chris Smith, small world.

Off Helvellyn?
3:30-3:44/km?
It’s all downhill.
Piece of quad shredding piss :rofl::rofl:

I think the death reports are usually tourist idiots in flipflops trying to climb up a mountain on a wet day totally unprepared

Or idiots that think they can run downhill at 3:30K pace

Haha, in the days when I could fell run and descend a bit :sunglasses: those days are long gone but it’s still fun going past the roadies that can’t descend

Descending tech trail is my super favourite! I love it! Like you say @jeffb, especially when running with my roadie mates!

@Adam - Bringing it back here

Looking like a 2hr6min bike leg for me, I’d say I’d be far more likely to be in the 2:10-2:15 range, due to being out of shape and unable to hold an aero position for any longer than 6 minutes at the moment

https://www.bestbikesplit.com/public/132005

And that is an absolute best case scenario - any gravel or descents with more than a 20 degree bend and I’m descending at 20kmh

about 4 minutes for transitions and 1hr 40mins on the mountain.

so about 4hrs 20mins - gives me a nice clock to watch…

…just got to convince the wife now

C’mon @gingerbongo - stop being naughty and post on the proper thread, will you?
I’m off to the Edge tomorrow morning to get some trail hill running in!
