2021 New Year’s Day 5K PB

Pb from a few years back chasing a club mate. I normally take first km bit more conservative. This one ended up more like an interval session…but it worked.

@NickBerry would’ve made a good race between us

Thats my pb effort. Very much from the go out pretty hard and try and hang on school.

I definitely get the whole “pacing yourself” thing. I learnt my lessons there a long time ago about not being remotely concerned with pacing. But over a 5k, at our level especially, I don’t see many people extracting their best from a negative split. Very different over a marathon, but not a 5k. You gotta push the envelope here.

If I can muster 18ish tomorrow, that’d be mightily impressive (given the time spent drinking on various calls, and the time I’m posting this!)

Have you seen him?
He’s a featherweight 🪶

I don’t have my splits from the 5km PB in March 2010, but I have a much worse recent 5km PB at a parkrun, with a dead turn.
First and last km feature a lap of a 400m running track, so they’re quick.

I started last year with an 18:49 and 19:11 for 5th and 7th at Delamere and Northwich park runs :sob:

This was mine from 2019 (not my pb).

Not a very well run race by the looks of it. Slow in the 2nd km, so got a wriggle on. Wasn’t focused on speed at all that year, so probably didn’t quite realise how quick I was at the time.

Very nice heart rate for your final km. must have had the bit in between your teeth!

Oh I did a bit of drunken willy waving last night did I :man_facepalming:

You were all too gracious to point out that it was in 2007. Looking back it’s no wonder I kept picking up injuries, in that fortnight above I’d done an effort session, a road race & 2 fell races before the 5km.

Anyway my latest 5km was Delamere ParkRun on the 8th Feb (18:46) & my splits were:
5:59
5:58
6:17
0:30

I’d be happy to be a minute slower than that at the moment.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being proud of working hard. It’s not like it’s totally out of context where you’re just showing off. That’s willy waving.

This is clearly a thread to talk about 5km pbs, so it’s totally relevant. I also find it very motivating talking to similarly minded people, both quicker and slower than me. There’s plenty to learn from both.

Its a term that gets a lot of stick on here. But it’s a forum about tri. As long as its in context to the discussion it’s fine.

This isn’t just aimed at you by the way @Doonhamer. I think I’m just having a thick headed rant after too much wine last night! :joy:

Still. I’ve a huge amount of respect for anyone running under 16, regardless of when it was!

The TT I did at the start of nov was actually well paced for once …

The key for me is trying to hold it back in km1. Not sure I’ll be able to match that today. Had a bit to drink but not too much, plenty of sleep and a Massive pancake breakfast. I’m raring to go (later). I’m just a bit fat :joy::joy:

I think it’s aimed at me and let me explain. I use the term when I see someone starting to believe their own press.

There are some truly fit and fast people on here and for the most part encouraging to anyone but it gets tedious when a small part of that cohort rarely give likes to anyone else’s achievements but want everyone to be in awe of theirs (and never miss an opportunity to post about it).

That’s the shit I call out. I get lambasted here when I post a small glimpse of my dinosaur past, so I let the studs that can’t possibly be taught anything by anybody that is now slower than them to get on with it.

The reason I’m proud of what I’ve achieved in the last 8 yrs is due to the constant surgical rehabs I’ve had to endure. I’m still proud of it because every day hurts and it would have been easier sit on the couch and be ‘woulda, shoulda, coulda’ but that’s not me.

What I don’t do though, is pour shit on or just ignore other people’s efforts on here. We all suffer in different ways. A proper community acknowledges this. Dick swingers are only interested in themselves.

That’s the difference.

Strewth…

I knew GB, Stenard, Poet, Chris S etc were talking high teens, 17-18, but chapeau to my fellow geriatrics who are still bashing out sub 19”s … just…

My SBR times are not that different to 20 ish years ago, I’m a poor swimmer so that helps, and my bikes are much faster now which helps too.

But stand-alone 5k run is probably the biggest victim of the ageing process, I’ll still have a go this year.

It’s started well with a last min day off… boom

Happy new year !!!

5km is 3.11 miles as rounded on strava…

(great time, should’ve gone off harder!)

Bit of a headwind on the way out.
I really can’t off too hard. My supply of matches is very small

I planned the route on Map My Run, but I think I cut a couple of corners as it should have not had that tiny bit at the end.

@Poet will be along to lambast me soon no doubt

There was a lamppost/box there so it’s a good marker for future tests

Was wondering who was going to pop up first

Well done @funkster that’s a great effort

My head is still a little delicate. Going to load up on a greasy breakfast and have a shot this afternoon
