2021 Open Water Swim season lift off

Only went there once… all I can remember was how hot it was that day and literally boiled in my suit. Just a right trek to get there too. Was run by one of the Tri clubs I think.
So yeah spring lakes revelation for me. Tow Bouy is mandatory. Loads of parking a minute from reception. Looks like all the amenities you need. No negatives from me so far.

Yeah, that’s the Hilton one :+1:t3:
Set up looks similar to Manley Mere up here.

Remember those tow floats slow you down

Is it slowing my biking down too??

Off topic - Friday, Buxton is planned in. Just to make myself accountable

Get the pork belly from Morrison’s hot food counter :yum::drooling_face::heart_eyes:

Ha ha ha :see_no_evil:

How’s the OW swimming going @gingerbongo ?

I know, i saw this today. That’s cool AF. That would be my actual dream to swim and see one of these badboys.

Unfortunately where we are, it just doesn’t seem to attract the big mammals and fish, yet just 20/30 miles around the coast they regularly will see dolphins, basking sharks, tuna, sunfish etc.

I think I’ll stick with the toe nibbling Ullswater pike

Does anyone on here use different wetsuits based upon conditions?

I ask, not in terms of snobbery (1 for each season within the year etc!) but merely as I want to continue to swim in my localish loch, but due to the temp being quite cold for someone who feels the cold, I have bought a trisuit (for events) and an insulated wetsuit (when I can be fussier).

Oh yes.

I’ve got a 12yr old Blue70 that is definitely warmer than my 9yr old Xterra & I think it’ll have to be approaching bath temperature to try out my new to me Zone3.

EDA I know of some lads who have been swimming in The Dee once a week all through the winter & they’ve been buying whatever it takes & fair enough I say.

Just the one suit for me. I find body temperature isn’t an issue in cold temps it’s just my hands go numb at about 11 degrees after around 20 minutes which is about the lowest temp I’ll venture in to the water.

11.4 degrees at the lake today. Managed just over 20 mins…plus some acclimatisation time.

Derwentwater currently 6 degrees apparently. What’s the regs on how cold it can be for full distance??

Ooof! I just swam in 12degs and high winds for about 45mins and was absolutely frozen when I got out (heaters on max + heated seat on :joy:)

Not sure there is a min temp, wetsuits are mandatory below 16.

Derwent was 14 in 2019 and that was unusually cold according to the organisers. Will be pretty dire if it is colder than that!:cold_face:

Edit: ah, below 11 BTF recommends swim doesn’t take place and distance reduced at 13 and below (section 4.4 of regs).

Plenty of time for it to warm up :crossed_fingers:, probably measures cold due to all the rain they have had.

I took a hot water bottle with me
Wasn’t actually too bad when got out.

Ordered a neoprene hat.

Yeah I think if they follow those regs might just about be ok. Tho currently using gloves … My hands won’t like 13 :worried:

wetsuits are mandatory below 14C - and then distances are altered according to water temp down to 11C when below that swims are cancelled. however if water 14C but air is 30C us TOs might have a different opinion!

same as above

unless we have a massive heatwave I don’t see many OW swims having wetsuit bans this season - but you just never know

16 for full distance according to the table in 4.2a

Oh I’m wearing a suit… That end of the spectrum is not an issue.
It’s the colder end I’m looking at

Haha…me too, will wear the suit as long as it’s an option. Saves me waaaay more time than it takes me to get out of it.

12 deg yesterday. First few hundred with gloves and booties. Took them off as it was getting bloody annoying. Not as bad as it could have been,

Weird driving home though, head was muzzy and almost felt drunk. Anyone else get this?

You wear earplugs @altayloraus ?
Could be the cold water inside your ears

Good call, will give it a shot. Had a neoprene balaclava but that doesn’t keep the water out!
