2021 Random Race Thread

Anyways, surely @mw22 is undisputed sandbag champ, have you seen his Stirling work on Lakesman in the training thread today?

More sandbags than the great flood of '83

I hope @fruit_thief gets the result fixed and a great race by the sounds of it. Pleased with my raz around Oulton Park this morning the initial 10.4km was ‘fun’ with a 36:33 for 10km on the nose at a controlled effort (makes me want to enter a 10km race to find out what I could do) and then 14 laps/60KM of the track in TT mode with the intention of lapping everyone who was behind me after T1. Being a dick for 90 mins kept me entertained whilst achieving my objective and then had to run myself from 3rd overall to 2nd and 1st Vet.
Distances worked out as 10.4/60/8.3 KM finishing in 2:44:11

Another stormer for the TT crew. Those 2 cracking podiums above and another 2nd in AG for @chickenboy at Cotswolds 113.

Well done chaps. Hard winters are paying off now for sure!

Top work @leahnp very impressive stuff.

Cheers Pete, yeah very happy with yesterday. Solid swim bike, 4th fastest bike split all day, I did go off like a loon and averaged 25mph for the first 28 mile loop, idiot!!! Ran off and felt fine for the first few miles, then just couldn’t hold pace. All good though. Outlaw half in two weeks to put that right, then back to race yer at cotswolds

On Sunday I organized and took part in the second edition of the Zugerman Triathlon. We have an unusual format: 500m, 1500m or 1900m swim, 30k, 60k or 90k, 180k ride, 5k, 10k or 21k run… mix and match as you wish.

50 people entered, which was great, especially as many had never done a triathlon. But at the front of the field we had 3 people who had been to IM70.3 world championships or Kona.

As I was RD and leading the swim safety, I started after everyone was safely out of the water, and all helpers were in place. It was a slighly lonely swim (no one to draft), however, 35mins was an excellent time for me. I don’t know what to think about the bike: I really struggled to get my HR up, it was stuck solidly in Zone 2 (144bpm), my AP was 255w and IF was 76%, so a bit low for a 70.3, but I really couldn’t go much harder. A time of 2h12m @ 39.5kph is pretty decent, but it didn’t feel very good. Then onto the run, I didn’t want to push as I am still recovering from a foot injury, however, like the bike, I felt sluggish and running at 4:30/km was as fast as I could get… and 2 toilet stops didnt make for a fast run, 1h35m. Total time was 4h29 and I finished 1st by 23s.

Getting a win is nice, however, this didn’t feel like a Kona qualifying performance. However, on every cloud there is a silver lining, this week I still feel fresh, I certainly don’t feel that I have just done a fast 70.3.

The next 4 weeks before Lanza I really need to focus in my diet and ensuring my body is in peak condition

@chickenboy is storming at the moment, it’s going to be an epic year if he stays injury free. At the moment, he is my benchmark of what is possible.

This was my first ever triathlon in 2014. I used to live on Portland, and you will have cycled right past my old house.

I was taking part in a windsurfing competition, however, there was zero wind, and we were all sat on the beach. I went to a bike shop to get some spares, and the owner, who I know well told me that there was a Triathlon that weekend. I gave Bustinskins a call on Saturday afternoon, and they told me that I could get a last minute entry if I turned up at 6am on Sunday Morning. I borrowed my brothers old bike, that was in my parents garage, found an ancient pair of running shoes, some shorts and an old GB rowing top (my brother’s). Went to the local sports shop and bought a pair of Speedos and goggles. I finished somewhere in the middle of the pack, but was instantly hooked on Triathlon, and I am not exaggerating when I say that it changed my life

Too kind mate. You’re crushing it too, those Zwift races you did were insane. Yeah, injury free is as much a goal as race times these days. Hoping to put down a better run at the outlaw half in two weeks. Funny old game this triathlon. Nothing is ever a given, regardless of how well training has gone- keeps it exciting

Zwift is a game, and knowing how to play is how to be successful, also I rarely do Zwift races longer than 45 minutes. IRL is different, 2-5 hours in TT position is very different to 45 minutes standing low cadence on Zwift. Having said that my 40km TTs and Hill Climbing events are similar power to my Zwift rides, and I am smashing every IRL PB by miles. However, I am seeing much smaller gains on longer rides, for example last year when my FTP was 10% lower, 76% IF for 2 hours didn’t feel too hard, at the moment 76% IF for 2 hours feels hard.

I was wondering the same thing, at first glance I thought he was wearing a weighted vest as seen in the world of Crossfit and what-not.

Weight vest plus 5000+ m elevation would be a spectacular choice

A crazy crazy race that my mate wants to do…
He asked if I fancied it…?!

White Oaks Sprint Triathlon

400m pool swim, 21km bike and 5.25km trail run

6th M40-54, 1h15m 16th overall out 95 starters

Really enjoyed it, it’s good to race

Sunny day, first pool race and it seemed fine no one catching me no one ahead. All out from the get go I felt like I was at threshold/Vo2max all the way as I was breathing really hard non stop but for some of the run down hills.

Zig zagged up and down and across the pool hauled myself out and legged it to the bike - smashed my swim watch yesterday evening so no idea my time…

T1 into the car park, race number on, ripped the straps of my helmet so had to re-attach, jammed glasses in…

Built my bike last night, gearing checked out fine, bit of a loose left brake I cheekily taped up, got a Garmin attachment on sticking out left as it’s too big for between the bars, but then my old nemesis Valve Extenders returned - or rather disappeared - to try to ruin my race again. With flat tyres I had a pre-race rendezvous to borrow and inflate.

The bike was flying! I had no idea the route and forgot my Garmin. I also forgot to start my watch. So I just hammered it. If I felt like I wasn’t hammering it…I started. :man_shrugging:t2: I was pouring fluids from my face and sounding asthmatic so whatever my power was it’s not like I could go harder. Hit a few bone shaker potholes and got caught on a red light but otherwise it was good. No one passed me, and I passed a few pedestrian people probably in the Olympic race.

T2 downhill into the bike dismount was a little unexpected so I dismounted with my shoes on, then ripped them off and started legging it. Bike racked, helmet off - where the fuck is the run exit - a weird cordoned loop instead of just running out of the car park and switch on the watch run activity…but forget to hit start. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:Again .

The run was more asthmatic effort just go hard! Even though hard is slow. Out onto a road, up a hill, into a park, onto a massively over grown trail, then gravel, then - it was all a bit too much overload - just run!

Sockless racing not such a good idea but it felt fine. Next 4% on gravel, roots and wet grass not great either but I stayed upright. Nobody passed me on the bike but unsurprisingly a couple of old guys passed me on the run, and later a couple of very skinny looking athletes flew by.

And finish.

Was very happy finishing but very disappointed when I found out my splits. I can’t fathom how I was 7:40 on the swim even with the run to the timing mat. 37:42 was for 21km apparently so maybe I’m being hard on myself but I was looking for 30:00. Run I wanted 25:00, it was a tad long but 26:54 is disappointing though I did fade on the last km.

Good news on transitions though, fastest ever 2:00 and 1:25
