Excellent work @joex , is that beer? Looks well deserved.
Some impressive collateral damage for a sprint race too

Looks like Erdinger Alcohol free, which is billed as a sports recovery drink or something like that.
Top work @joex
Well done @joex
Great race!
Bike of champions too.
Yup they were handing out the Erdinger, reminds me of Hever I think and one of the IMs.
It’s not bad, I might buy a batch as I’m not enjoying alcohol at the moment.
Thanks all.
It really was great to do, literally shake the cobwebs off, and find the things I need to sort out before Dartford Bridge.
Race Brain - I had forgotten this! One guy just could not see the finish arch. He ran past it right, then past it left, then he ran around it, then finally went back and crossed the timing mat.
I’m a bit like that on races… they need to be proper simple.
Just seen the bike split … bloody hell, perfect tarmac all downhill no doubt!
You southerners get all the good courses!
Seriously wish I could get my new Argon to go that fast!!

Big shame I forgot the Garmin at home, could have been some useful data in there. There wasn’t much free wheeling, just a couple of dodgy looking turns I didn’t want to accelerate into. Country lanes → residential → dual carriageway → A road. All rolling really nothing flat I recall.
I think Im going to struggle to hit my goal for 40km, but that’s okay - it is what it is.
The run may actually be a positive sign. For the 5km I recorded +60m, 1min is missing, 5:05/km when I was after 5 flat. On a flat run course, which Dartford and London are it might not be so bad. I held a pretty high HR so I might get the Olympic run split I want.
I don’t really buy into that much tech… perhaps I should ?
What was kph for bike?
About 33.5kph according to an online calculator
About what I’d hope for at a much longer distance TBH.
Edit. Looks like +250m for 21km.

Good work @joex. Bet it felt wicked to unleash the reigns and just go for it in a race!
How is funkster doing !?
Did he win?
Did his hr go above 100?
Seemed to suggest he struggled with something on the run. Said he just couldn’t be bothered. So jot sure if it was a general feeling or caused by heat/race issues or whatever. Sure he’ll be along later.
No
Yes
Pretty much both.
Only just got home so will do a race report once I’ve sorted kit and got a pizza
tl:dr - fit but fatigued / Everyone in London came to Camber
Marshman Half
Have done this event a few times, including a 1st place in 2019 and 1st in the 3/4 Iron Distance they ran in 2014?
Have not raced other than one 10 TT since June 2019 at IM Frankfurt
Bit nervous that I had all my kit and that I’d be able to put the 3 disciplines together.
Despite lots of training, I always seem to struggle with racing.
Noticed a name on the start list I recognised from a lot of Oly racing back in the day - Scott Wiseman.
He won the standard last year and I remember him kicking my arse at every race.
Swim
Meant to be 1900m, consisting of 2 3/4 laps of 700m
Hooter goes and I find myself near the front, but there are some “proper” swimmers this year.
4 go off and in 200m, I’m all alone.
After about 500m I’m reeling in the guy who went off too fast.
Then I’m back to being alone.
Feel ok, but no I’m not moving at hour IM pace
The front 3 are a good 150m ahead.
Out of the swim, look at my watch and it reads 25 something
Not 1900m then - Garmin gives it at 1550m
Leisurely T1 and we’re off onto the bike
Bike
It’s a little jaunt down a lane for about 500m, then 2 laps with some residential at the start.
It’s a flat course, but the wind can make it feel soul destroying.
Lydd to Breznett to Appledore to Rye to Camber to Lydd
Today the wind Gods are kind and it’s less then 10mph
First part I’m all alone, so get down on the new pads, focus on position
2019 I did 259W for 23.7mph, so this is the goal.
Power is a cap, not a target.
I’ve not done any long efforts, so am using RPE as a guide,
New pads feel good and allow me to stay in the TT position.
However, I now don’t have a BTA bottle. so need to remember to drink.
First 30 minutes and average speed is 24mph
I then catch a glimpse in the distance of what appears to be two race numbers.
Just as I hit Rye at 17 miles, there’s traffic which brings us to a grinding halt.
Guy nips round but I can still see him.
Then as I’m approaching a bridge, the two cars in front suddenly stop to let a lorry come the other way.
Cue full rear wheel skid and I’m nearly over the handlebars and into the back of the car.
Back on track and I’m after matey boy #14
Winding roads towards Camber and just as I’m at him, we hit traffic.
Bumper to bumper traffic.
About half mile at 9am all trying to park at Camber.
Only option for us to very carefully go up the outside until we get past it.
Then I get stopped at a pelican crossing
Finally we past it and back to motoring.
1:00 in and I’ve done just over 24 miles
Second lap passes without any incident as I start to catch the tail enders of the Oly race.
Matey boy is hanging on about 200-300m back.
Then we reach Rye for the second time.
Grid lock and no way past.
Make it out of town but the half mile from earlier is now (after I measured it on Map my Run) 5 miles
5 miles of bumper to bumper
Luckily there’s not much coming the other way, so we’re back to try to work our way up the outside.
I told the RD after the race that everyone should be DQ’d as no one wouldn’t have crossed the white line.
Racing is now out the window until the end of the seafront, so I’m leading as others are following.
In the town centre me and #14 stop as the road is blocked and comment that there’s no point going hard.
This also means getting any nutrition in is impossible.
As we say this, the eventual winner almost hits us as he goes in between a van turning right and a stationary car. TWAT
Eventually we make it back to Lydd and TWAT is only about 300m ahead.
T2 I take slowly so I can let TWAT know that he is a TWAT.
53.2 miles
2:22:08 / 256W NP
Run
Run is 4 laps. Pretty much pancake flat.
I’m not feeling particularly “racey” after the bike, but think about treating it as training for the marathon in two week.
Watch is showing average pace and straight away it’s at 6:30 per mile
Slow. Down. You. Idiot.
First 5km is about 21:30, including a brief stop as some cramp felt like it was coming, which I know won’t last.
Then the cramp I forgot I get, came.
Nothing too bad, but enough to stop me for a stretch and a lap of 7:45
From then on, I just felt tired.
Couple of 7:20s and then a 7:03, but that was it.
It was hot, my heart wasn’t in it and I could have easily sacked it after 5km.
Dropped the pace down and used it as mental exercise to try and help me in 2 weeks.
Just wanted it to be over, so just ticked over
1:37:08 / 7:23 mile pace / 141HR
On the plus side, I literally finished, met Mum, walked straight back to transition, grabbed my gear and off we went. We visited family friends in Romney for about 90 minutes after and then 75 minute drive home
I don’t feel ruined (not yet anyway) which goes back to the tl:dr
I think I’m very fit at the minute, but possibly should have gone a bit easier this week rather than 11+ hours before this morning
New bike pads / position feel good
New tri-suit felt ok.
I didn’t sack it off
Lots to work over the next few weeks.
Some longer efforts and some long bricks
Good report.
Promising figures there, well done, thought you had crashed.
Traffic sounds crap
It was hazardous bordering on dangerous.
It would only have taken one rider being a little far over or a motorist deciding to be an idiot
Sounds like a tough day physically and mentally. That traffic would have done my head in.
Well done mate.
Yeah - sounds bad ![]()
Doesn’t @fatbuddha live down near Camber Sands?
This is why I stopped racing on the A50 TT courses and the Vitruvian - roads just felt dangerous.
