Hope it cools down for you
here’s one to look at if you’re after something different - Brecon to Cardiff Ultra. 70km, one direction, UTMB qualifier. It says “downhill” after Torpantu but I’d take that with a pinch of salt - no major uphills but will be some ups.
Bad news on that front. Overnight all the charts are aligning predicting record breaking heat. Still possible it will change as thats still a few days out to be certain but looking like its going to be very hot.
Good grief
Right - that’s an awful rollover Staffs done.
a partially salvaged Cotswold Classic done.
Just got a pool sprint in August left.
But focus now turns to a small weight loss, plyometrics, core, calf raises, standing jumps and some speedwork ![]()
Time to get that 5km under 18 minutes
(And something else which ties in with it ![]()

Sounds like a potential boom or bust on the recent foot/ankle depending how aggressive you are on the plyo/speed.
It’s a bold strategy cotton…
Although it is also my goals for next few months. Get strong, especially around the glutes to get my hip under control, and get some 5-10k speed back
Well…it’s like @APM - I fell in November.
It’s now June.
I’ve done two middle distance events and it’s held up.
So I’ll just need to be careful - hopping side to side was recommended, plus a ridiculous amount of calf raises (both of which I actually enjoyed doing!)
It’s been too long and I’m bored of feeling sorry for myself ![]()

It’s now July, but that proves your point even better ![]()
Touché didn’t realise that long, and I definitely agree with the principal, just I’d say strength, balance, coordination come before starting plyos.
I refuse to believe this fact.
I’d like all of the days it rains back in summer, please.
I’m here for you man.
Goal achieved! 4:59.03 (and 3rd place) at the race tonight. Have to admit although I was aiming for it, and ran to pace, rather than raced, before the race I was expecting I’d finish closer to 5:05!
That’s awesome. Sub 5 mile is shifting!
Brilliant, well done mate ![]()
Small mid-late season update.
I survived UTMB, somehow! So I’m taking that as a bonus and getting under 19 hours was probably as good as I could have done.
Still haven’t cracked sub-5 at 70.3, Holland was close but the short but slow bike course cost me, run and swim weren’t bad. Feel fairly confident I’d have done this at the cancelled Dresden race on the last bike course they proposed.
Can’t see that happening at St George but I’ll see, depends on road surfaces really.
Parkrun times have slightly improved but I suspect that’s because I’ve lost a bit of weight rather than actual training.
I think I might have progressed from a B- to a B!
Sub 90min HM hasn’t come off this year, severe lack of run training since Cotswolds meant I could only plod around London HM in 1hr50 this morning. Oh well, there’s always next year…!
Got a sprint Duathlon in November and that’s it for 2022. Unless the chance of a sub20 parkrun raises its head (un-bloody-likely).
2022 is officially my worst year ever. The season started with a (still rubbish) pb at Inverness half. I should have just sung Flower of Scotland then and called it a day for the year. A bout of Covid and long recovery put paid to the next couple of races. Over the summer I managed to get my energy expenditure woefully wrong and ended up needing to take 5 weeks off work and very light recovery training only.
I have one race left, Loch Ness marathon in a months time. I’ve got no long runs in the legs and while I’m confident I could turn up and at least get to the end I’m not sure it’s worth it as I’ll need a much longer recovery at the moment. The alternative is to bin it off and concentrate on building some consistent training over the winter months and hopefully not make such a hash of 2023. It’s not really a difficult decision but it kinda is all the same.

This is the first year in years where I haven’t completed an event. I was going to do a few audax but I just didn’t fancy it, as I was still recovering from covid in the new year. I think it’s been good for me though, to have a bit of a reset and I’ve been able to focus on a few other things. My cycling club have our Open 10 TT next month and I might enter it just to help make up the numbers, but that will be the only race that I do for the whole year.
Made easier by a senior moment on a crag yesterday and a swollen ankle.
2022 goals revised. Make it through the last 6 weeks of work and turn focus to 2023 and actually some racing.
Ouch! Hope the ankle is a bit better today.
