@Chriswim do you know about the Rottnest Island swim? I don’t think you can travel into WA at the moment but it’s a bit of an epic one. You need a support paddler.
I can’t remember what time of year it is either.
I’ve heard of that one, supposed to be epic.
Start was delayed a few hours couple of years back because a 3m great white shark was spotted nearby.
Remember you don’t need to outswim a shark, just the guy next to you.
Saw it advertised when I was able to go to Perth/Rottnest, 20km is a bit scary* but it’s certainly very popular!
For the foreseeable future though as much as they claim they’re opening up, if you travel interstate you’re not allowed to work in an ED department or ICU for 7 days on return, so that stops me going anywhere.
Don’t see the logic how I can see covid patients in hospital, and go to a supermarket etc here where covid is now willingly rampant for first time, but not be allowed to go interstate
but that’s definitely one for the rant/crisis threads.
*as are the sharks.
Siren goes off here every couple days, which is something I definitely wasn’t expecting or prepared for. At least here they’re mostly bronze whalers is the only thing reassuring me to keep getting back in.
Looks like the organisers of the Sundowner & Yorkshireman went out of business last year so unless someone steps in those races have probably gone, bit of a shame as the Yorkshireman was really well organised.
It does mean though that it looks like I’m still reigning M45 champion
I’ve been in the surf three times with the shark siren going off. one time was a false alarm from dolphins (it was choppy, so sometimes hard to tell) at Cronulla.
One was some hammerheads quite a way offshore at Long Reef. The third time was a shark but it was dead and floating, that was in Newcastle.
Sounds like it didn’t gan canny up the toon
I pulled out of Israman today. Airline cancellations, travel restrictions, and potential lockdowns and quarantine finally tipped the balance. So I’m going to start looking for an IM in the April-May range – there’s not much on until then.
Lanza? May 21st
Thanks! That’s a good one. I did it in 1999 – my first IM, finished DFL at 16:51. Maybe it’s time to go back
I’d really like to do one I’ve never done before, though.
barely adds up to an ironman
thank fek for that…i could bare having to get a tattoo…
Enough of all this virtual points chasing, today I raced IRL and apparently I am the fastest old man who could be bothered to turn up and run around a muddy field in Gloucestershire.
With a wet and windy forecast and the fact it hadn’t stopped raining all week I was expecting a mud bath, but Adam Henson obviously keeps his fields in pretty good nick so no ankle deep mud, just a few sketchy corners. No big hills to speak of either, but lots of bumps, like a badly maintained golf course, difficult to get a good rhythm.
I actually had quite a lonely race, after the initial mad mile I was distanced ahead and behind. Think I overtook 3 people all race, and the only one to come past me was sprinting back after stopping to put his show back on! Cruelly they made you run past the finish and around ‘the bumpy field’ one more time and the specified 8.7k measured over 10 on most watches, but I managed to hold position, though at the time I had no idea what that position was.
Yet to see any published results, but apparently I missed my moment on the county podium as 1st M50. It must have been pretty close as 3rd was less than a 20sec back.
Not a bad return given the lack of run training I’ve been doing lately. Maybe I should actually train for the 10k next month.
Great opening to '22. Well done
Awesomeness!!! Love it!
great stuff
Well done Buzz, but you are slipping down the leaderboard on Zwift
Half marathon on Sunday for me, it’s a flat boring but fast course depending on conditions around York, but is a bit open if there’s any wind. Big field that drags you along a bit.
Not a high priority race and I’m under no illusions it will be anywhere near a PB, but if things go to plan I might get 1:27/1:28 which will be par for my current fitness.
Onwards and upwards.
Looks to be wind free, but a bit Brass Monkey’s
State aquathlon champs tomorrow: 2.5km-750m-2.5km. Good session this morning on transitions, but sure I’ll still manage to mess up tomorrow and swim with a race belt on

Most years there is a (surprisingly popular) 2km swim-5km run event that sets off one hour after the championship race and people do both, but no long-course event this year due to tide timings.
