2023 races

Plausible perhaps, but no reason the answer isn’t in the water samples.

depends when the samples are taken. it usually takes 24-48hrs to turn results around from a sample which, for a Sunday event, means sampling on Wednesday/Thursday latest as labs won’t run at weekends.

a lot can happen to water quality between sampling day and race day if there has been heavy rain

True, so to prove it presumably all one would have to do is take samples on the day as well? In order to know.

In the race @APM and I did. Organisers took samples a week before to give the lab time to process it. They tested for 2 bugs and they came back clear. Race went ahead, there had been rain the night before and during the race. The organisers took samples on the day as well. Lots of people got sick. Adam tested positive for Cryptosporidium. Results came back from the samples on the day of the race, and they were clear. However, they only tested for ecoli varients again, not crypto. Official line was must be athletes passing norovirus around, and not a water problem. Sounds similar to Sunderland response. Hopefully the testing can improve in the future.

yes - but assuming you’re expecting an issue. many don’t bother so you have a horse/stable door issue playing catch up if issues do develop.

I’m thinking there is value in knowing for diagnosis of the sick and for stopping future problems. May find out it’s not cow poo washing in after all, but something else.

Is it expensive? I’m kind of thinking it’s ridiculously easy, like stick in a container, send it to the lab.

I think that’s it, @d.t.

In our case I think the organiser followed process (although the comments about a viral infection were not helpful)….

…… it’s just the process that was obviously woefully inept.

Not that expensive but there is a cost of course and most EOs would rather not spend money if they don’t have to. It is basically as you say - sample, send, wait for results.

There are rapid test systems that can be used on site but they come at some considerable cost of course as you need special test machines. World Triathlon deploy these for major events.

So Oulton park rowathon standard

5k row ( concept 2) my mate actually thought I got in a boat but he’s a scouser ?!

38… advertised as 28 k bike

8.6 km run.

Weather was grim driving there and during the first half of the race. I honestly nearly drove home at 11 o’clock, only 3 of us in the longer row event
One didn’t show…
the other jumped to the sprint at the last min
So I knew I had a chance at the podium … lol.

Got going and spent most of the 5k talking it really easy and watching some quite bizarre 2 k efforts from from 9? People who have always wanted to do a triathlon but can’t swim . At all.

21:30 bang on. As planned.

Plan was to ride the bike flat out, like a tt to destroy my legs as Jan next year is all about “ compromised running”

Averaged about 34 kph ish.

More importantly I ran 4:50 possibly faster as results are not out yet ( my watch is crap) on smashed legs this was why I did this race.

2;12 total av hr ( crazy)

I really enjoyed it, all range of athletes from very good ( dokas mate ) to big people riding mud pluggers.

Won a £10 wiggle voucher ! And a brew cup.

A good day in the end
