2024 Goals

I don’t think I actually set any goals for this year.

Did race one tri in each discipline though which I don’t think I’ve done in a season before. Scraped a few AG top tens (11th Weymouth) off of a very poor amount of training tbh.

Not Tri related but this is where I am against mine.

Going to have a go at some strength stuff this winter
Not as dedicated as this, but some form of record will be kept.

My son benched 112.5 kg last weekend
He’s 68 kgs

Double your body weight is a thing apparently and quite rare ?!

That’s well impressive, those percentages in my grid are supposedly considered strong in lifting circles so the difference between 125% and 200% on Bench is huge.

Not a goal I set at the beginning of the year, but as I stepped into the Lazer Quest arena you better believe I was aiming to destroy all the little kids. Goal achieved, I was the top scorer dragging the red team to victory.

The usual mixed bag

Skierg sub 7min 2k - Fail
Skierg sub 19min 5k - Pass
Skierg sub 85min half marathon - Pass
Skierg sub 3hr Marathon- Fail

Spent the early part of 2024 on the Skierg following a training plan. The ultimate goal was a sub 7min 2k but just couldn’t deliver the power. I got sick after the ¹/² Marathon and missed weeks of training. The sub 3 marathon is doable if i get the volume up again.

Bench 100kg - Fail
Deadlift 140kg - Fail
Pullup BW + 30kg - Pass
1 arm chinup - Pass

Plateaued on the big lifts doing a 5x5 program, got frustrated and haven’t lifted in months.

Run Sub 19min 5k - Pass
Run Sub 40min 10k - Pass
Run Sub 90min 21k - Fail

Got my running volume up in the middle of summer and followed a structured 10k training plan. Ran a couple of sub 19min parkruns recently.

Not sure these are comparable.

If you could bench 100kg you can deadlift over 160kg surely?

As a “ steady “ ski erg kind of guy
There will be people on here who have literally never used one ( I was one till hyrox )

That 5 k time stands out as very very good.

Become quite friendly with a 500/ 1000 m ski monster this year

3 rd best time over 500 this year ( world wide )
I”ll ask him what his best 3 mile is… pretty close I think

Impressive … well done

Is it the machine with long handles - looks mental?!

The very one !
Pretty horrible but not as bad as wall balls ( well not at the speed I go at anyway )

We have a Concept ski erg and C2 rower at home - give me the rower every day as the skier just hurts. It “seems” easier but I reckon it’s much more aerobic than the rower.

I doss both in “ the ultimate test of fitness and strength “

There really are some (unts about !

4:30 ski ( 1 k) because it allows me to run well either side and 4:30 row because I’m smashed by that stage and this allows some recovery

Totally agree row is much easier for the same speed

I was aiming for 1.5 x bw for BenchPress and 2x bw for Deadlift. Not sure how they compare

On the Concept2 rankings for season 2024 it was 119th out of 832 ranked pieces. The average 5k time for males was just over 21mins.
Unfortunately the rankings aren’t split into light weight and heavy weight as per rowing. Weight and height is a huge advantage on the SkiErg too.

And age - the younger the faster. I don’t look at the rankings but if I do the Concept WOD (usually on the rower) and look at the results, it’s rare that anyone past the age of 60 will appear in the top 50 for that day - and almost never in my 70-74 AG. The profiles of the fastest rowers often show them to be club rowers with lots of experience and usually over 180cm tall - weight isn’t so key.

The best skierg’ers on the WOD often seem to be from either the Nordic or Eastern European countries - and are likely to be experienced XC skiers in real life so have better technique.

Correct age is a major factor, c2 machines demand a combination of power/strength endurance alongside cardiovascular fitness. Filtering the results by age category provides a comparision.

I had some video analysis on my SkiErg technique by a Swedish xc ski coach, what is taught in gyms and shown in the majority of youtube tutorials is incorrect.
Interestingly though, some of the best SkiErg times are held by big, strong athletes with no cross-country skiing background, like Jason Marshall and James Hall. Their technique differs significantly from that of elite skiers like Andreas Nygaard, the pro XC athlete who holds the marathon record.

From the research (read Googling) I did that’s a bigger ask on Bench than Deadlift.
The consensus seemed to be that a comparable level of strength would be 1.25xBW on Bench for 2xBW on Deadlift with 1.5x being a decent Squat Target.

Sweet that makes it more realistic. Had 1rm at 90kg earlier this year at 71kg bw

over short distances that’s no surprise as it’s about power and not stamina. same on the rower - some of the short distance records are held (or were held) by big power guys such as Eddie Hall (former worlds strongest man) and his son. and back in the day Andy Ripley and Roger Uttley, former British Lions rugby players and both over 6’4 so had power and leverage.
