2024 Races

This morning was the 6th race in the Ramadan series, out of 7. Started ominously with the swim being off the beach outside this tower block

Walked out onto a breakwater for a good long stare into the water. Saw medium sized fish, but no sharks, so decided to chance it.

Water was lovely. 800m swim across the man-made lagoon and back. 13m09

Bike was 20km on the usual track, it was nice to do it in daylight for once. There was a stiff headwind again on the way out, phone says 30kmh and I can believe it. I concentrated on getting as low and aero as possible and keeping the Watts high. At the turnaround point I had averaged 32.2kmh at 254W. On the way back the strong tailwind somehow made it difficult to keep the power up. Coming off the ramp to a flyover, was freewheeling at 50kmh  By the end, average pace had increased to 38.4kmh but average power dropped to 230W. Happy with that though, felt like was getting a few Watts back as the chest infection improves.

TT bike made a huge difference today because of the strong wind, probably 5 minutes looking at the splits of those who only had roadies.

Think I was actually in the lead at this point, but unfortunately, when I stepped off the bike, the pipe organ chest was back. First 2 km felt dreadful, couldn’t breathe properly, ran a sort of smokers shuffle at 5m15 per km stopping every 200m to hawk up some stuff from Mars. Picked up the pace a little after that but it was not a run to be proud of. Don’t yet know final placings because staggered start. Might just have held on for 3rd :crossed_fingers:t2:

Still, really enjoyed it again & it has been something of a race binge so far this year. I think this was 12th race, and 9th multisport :astonished:

the Ramadan race series winds up with a final 5km run on Monday evening. Sadly it looks like the Irish guys have too much of a lead for F.O to catch them though.

Northumberland Du thrown into chaos as Disc wheels are now not permitted (ok the wind speed is now predicted to be 45-47mph, down from 50mph) but the front wheel is the issue not the rear. Some are saying that if CTO is making a call on the wheels now then the race should be binned.
Now planning on swapping out cassettes etc and I bet they will roll over on Sunday if someone complains and turns up with a disc wheel

seems a bit early to make a call on discs imho. OK - warn competitors there might be a ban on the day if wind is that bad but tell them to bring alternative wheels in case the ban goes ahead.

Just reminds me of the World Du champs in Edinburgh when they initially banned discs and relented the day before when the stock of rear wheels in Edinburgh had been depleted.

I’ve done some pretty windy races on a disc and never felt dangerous, but I guess I’ve got 75kg of ballast :joy:

Front is a totally different story, especially if there’s a hedgerow with a break or gate!

Just had an email for the 25 I’m doing on Sunday about the wind suggesting people understand their wheel choices for the conditions.

Especially as there’s a few occasions you cross the A1 so will probably go across us.

Northumberland Du this morning which is a World Champs qualifier. The wind lived up to the BBC predictions and thankful that discs were banned. The run course had to held on the beach as the
Trails and roads were under water. 10km of running on a beach into a headwind is not fun. Will be one of the slower qualifying events this year.

I saw there’d been a late change to the run course this morning on one of the local tri groups.

How did you get on? Times looked good on Strava :+1:

Secured 7th overall, 2nd v45 and a qualification spot in the v50s for next years Worlds in Pontevedra. Bike was a total grind heading south but a rapid ride North towards Amble

Got a local fell race on Sunday, about 20K but not particularly technical except a little section up and down the Teesside Matterhorn! It’s a nice route though. I’ve gone under 2 hours in the past which is just about acceptable but will be well off that this time as I’m not going to push it and risk injuring myself.

Entered it mainly to force myself into a long run.

And little Rosey

Fairly pleased with the race today given the lack of fell running, quite some way off my best but that was about 9 years ago!

Tried to get towards the front as there’s a pinch point after about 500m up a track, although it has been widened by the look of it. Then just tried to keep it at a manageable pace as a lot of the first 3K is uphill. Then got to about the only boggy part of the route on the open fell but even that wasn’t bad, just a couple of patches. After that the Peg T2’s were fine even with a fairly worn tread, and as the trails have dried a bit they were probably the best choice.

It started stretching out at this point and I was with a few people, occasionally someone would go past. Around halfway I went past a couple of people and was just trying to hold my pace knowing we had the double up & down and only real technical bit, the second smaller climb was probably worse. I’d dropped a couple of them at that point and was feeling better than expected so kept going.

With about 3K to go it’s pretty much all downhill, managed to get a couple more who were starting to feel it.

Finished in 1:55 which I’ll take given the current form, expecting DOMS in the next few days!

Hopefully no obvious issues with the hamstring but not looking to go much further any time soon.

4th from 5 at the Turkey World Para Cup. 2nd fastesd swim & bike but run didn’t go well. Been having trouble with the leg staying on after sweating & was in trouble after the first km in the heat. Tried to stop & sort it but couldn’t dry the liner with just a tri suit so wasn’t any better when I put it back on. Struggled on with it just to get to the line.
I’ve lost a bit of volume in the stump and a bit of weight too so hopfully is better when I get a new socket but couldn’t sort in time for this race.

The event was well done and its been a good experience overall.

Just entered Windsor. Totally got by an ad that popped up, checked it out, price wasn’t as bad as I thought it may have been. June 9th, I might be going alright by then!
