4:32 for Adam, solid performance with not a lot of distance training, not sure if the weather turned or ran out of legs in the last 6k.
4:32 total time ?
Beats my best for sure.. he’s took over from you as captain sandbag ..?!
Mud !!!
Yuck ?
No swim, it was cancelled.
I see!
Inbetween watching two huge boxing fights, world champs and a pre arranged dinner I’ve had crazy day
They made it a duathlon ?!?
Or tt bike start ?!
Yeah, bike\run TT start.
Well done @jeffb , great effort and great write up!

Okey dokey.
I’d been waiting for the official photos because they fill the gaps in my literary limitations, but who knows when they’ll drop?
It was another Eliminator SwimRun based in gorgeous Aberdyfi, the course comprised of
- Run 280m
- Swim 520m
- Run 900m…..with a cheeky steep climb/descent of 60m
- Swim 180m
- Run 120m
As it was eliminator format, if you didn’t make the cut-offs you were pulled out & the times were
- 26mins
- 25mins
- 23mins
- 21mins
- 19mins
- anyone left it’s a race to the line
There’s a sporting tide that runs up & down the Dyfi estuary & the organiser had tried to juggle start times & prevailing tides to allow slower swimmers at least a couple of rounds before things got too spicy. The first long swim should have the benefit of an incoming tide early on & the second short swim would be a bit of a fight before there was a short period of slack tide & things switched.
I was in the fortunate position that I found the first 2 rounds quite comfortable. The swims - although a bit fresh & choppy because the the strengthening wind - were quite leisurely & I was able to chat with those around me on the run.
The 3rd round took a bit more concentration & I noticed I was out of the long swim on 10:30mins
The 4th round there wasn’t much chatting at all & I clocked 11:40 after swim one.
The 5th round was fucking carnage
The tide had fully turned & the wind was whipping in over our right shoulders. Taking in air - not sea water - became a gamble, sighting was random & passing moored yachts which earlier flashed by took several strokes. My watch had me at 17:30 ![]()
Obviously I wasn’t going to make the 19mins cut-off but as this was going to be my last round & it had to be a full gas effort to see what my final position would be….5th it turned out & no-one had come close to breaking the final cut-off.
I felt sorry for my Strava friends as I recorded my day as 5 races, but the fella who finished behind me recorded all 5 of the sections of the 5 races which was handy for a bit of data mining.
The runs were as expected, but the swims…
- swim 1, 5:53/swim 2 not recorded
- swim 1, 5:42/swim 2, 2:38
- swim 1, 6:05/swim 2, 2:46
- swim 1, 9:03/swim 2, 2:26
- swim 1, 16:27/swim 2, 2:51
I was pumped after the race. It was one of those few races that just about balances personal safety with the adrenaline created by extreme conditions. The last race I did that felt as edgy as that was when we were allowed to do the full Helvellyn route in 2020 when the organiser could easily shortened it due to the weather.
Got to say, that format sounds absolutely superb. Would love to try one.
Nice work !
You can swim with paddles and pull buoy??
Well done that man! ![]()
It is indeed a fun format. This was my 3rd eliminator & will never forget my first one & how the rounds went from joggy & chatty to breathlessly asking my wife how many I’d done ![]()
I deliberately posted the swim photo - with trainers on - & the run photo - with pull buoy tucked away - to give a bit of a technical insight.
Mrs D & I are going down to Tenby this weekend to support a couple of friends, do we have anyone from here doing IMW? Do you have any friends you want me to terrify?

Look at that for a perfectly disciplined and executed run/walk strategy at the IMWC by our own @Toyota_Crown ! ery impressive, for a more than solid 3.43
We would expect nothing less
There’s a guy from my club going, should be in Turbo colours, Rob Hart, he’s been on really good form this year and should go well.
I should probably report back that despite having no swim Weymouth was a fairly enjoyable race.
I’m genuinely not sandbagging when I say I’ve done very little exercise over the last couple of months so really had zero expectations, especially after being a bit shit at Swansea.
As I turned up just in time to register Saturday this meant I had an obscenely high bib number. Normally not an issue and I was actually end of rack but with no swim and a TT start this meant we were set off in number order. So a very frustrating hour or so waiting once the first guys went off until I was allowed to start. I just had a bit of fun really, didn’t ride to power just what I thought was acceptable which ended up 236ap/258np with 2:41:55 on a road bike which I was fairly pleased with. Essentially spent the whole ride overtaking people just like the old days…
Run was always going to be a bit crap with an overall annual worst distance wise to date. The first 8 or so kms were fine but then I was getting found out pretty quickly after that. New course was interesting and includes a section around a park. It’s pretty narrow in places and if you were gunning it could be frustrating getting stuck behind traffic. It also gave a bit of respite from the wind too. Finish area is new too which logistically makes sense being much closer to transition but felt a bit underwhelming really. Just as I was finishing it had started to rain which was pretty bloody annoying considering the cancelled swim. Sat in the finish area eating a very al dente pizza as it hammered it down for a few minutes which is why I understand they didn’t want the back of the field out in the bike but I still feel that the orgs were overcautious. Ran in 1:47 which is shite but completely expected.
Think I just about scraped 30 ish AG and need to look at what to do next year, will probably get AWA with those two finishes but 70.3 prices are getting firmly eye watering…
Looks like great fun, well done!
Might look into to that…
