Great running, 2 seconds would have been nice.
Top work that @funkin
Just had a nice lunch with @Toyota_Crown
Well, I say nice but he called me several names due to being a southerner and drinking coffee rather than tea.
Outlaw done, I think that was a 54 minute PB at 70.3 distance.
Well done, for a southern coffee drinker ![]()

54min pb
.
That doesn’t happen every day. Well done
.
Its been a while since I completed one tbf. Very soft target.
Some great racing @Jgav and @funkin
@funkin how did you pace that 10k to nail it within 1 second? By feel, or run to a particular guide pace?
The course is pretty clear of trees for the majority so my oldish (2019) Garmin is pretty accurate for GPS. I wanted around 6:36 per mile and just got to that pace and stuck with it, mostly by feel once I got to it. I started ahead of the 40 minute pacers and they slowly drifted past me at around 1km. The speed they came past reassured me that I hadn’t gone out too fast.
Went through 5k in about 20:20 but knew there’d be a headwind on the seafront for 4K on the way back. I worked back up to a massive group at one point (I’m in the yellow visor tucked in)…
…but once I caught up with this group and it felt much easier I noticed the pace had slowed down - so I pushed on ahead and nobody was able to stay with me. I caught another couple of people a km up the road but went straight past them after a tiny “rest”.
I felt well within myself for the first couple of miles or so and then the work began and I had enough in me to do it (must have been the gels). Makes a change as I’ve done this race 16 times now I believe and most years I’ve been in a world of pain in the latter stages. The course is dead flat which helps with pacing for sure.
Turning the final corner I looked at my watch and it said 40:30 ish so I really dug in.
Oh the official results took a second off of most people’s SMS time so it now says 41:00. ![]()
Did you see Kat?
No, but she was probably half way home by the time I crossed the line.
Team Bottrill went 3:55
Second placed relay team had an uber swimmer who finished in 19:xx
But what blew my mind was 1st 2nd 3rd all were between 3:48 and 3:50 total time which is a bit bonkers.
Nearly all the front guys seemed to swim 18-20, suggesting the swim was around 1500m?
Yes, they shortened the swim to 1500m due to temperature, both air and water. Checked individual results and a few went under 19 which was good going in those conditions. Apparently 20+ pulled out with hypothermia or shock.
I think the water was low 14c. Not great for the BOP swimmers who may need to take all of the 1h20 cutoff time to complete the swim.
I wonder how many of those pulled out had actually done an OW this year?
Crazy how the depth of racing has improved over the years.
I was top 50 in 2013 with a 4:49. That’d barely get in the top 200 these days. Mainly seems to be on the bike there’s big gains.
Yeah lad I swim with went 19:48. He was thinking last week the swim may be cancelled because of algae, which is strange at those low temps!
So many went 2.05 - 2.15 on the bike. It’s not hilly but I don’t think it’s the fastest course, some quite technical sections especially heading back in past Holme Pierrepont.
Crazy fast, was there much drafting on the course?
Road surfaces got any better? My girlfriend did it a few years back and said they were awful.
Interesting. Just spoke to a work colleague who was asking for some advice as his daughter’s boyfriend did it and has spent the last 24hrs spewing his guts up. I immediately thought water and he did take quite a bit in apparently.
There were quite a few messages in the lead up. They were doing some sort of ultrasonic shock treatment to clear it up.
I was really struggling with my stomach on the run, not gel related I don’t think. Held it together but did think I was going to spew.
I did a little club trail race on Friday, just near Lincoln. The race was fun but had a quick chat with TC but I am pretty sure I saw THE actual toyota crown in the car park.
