Gonna sit in the bath and do a report
Good Man
Well done funkster
Impressive and barmy in equal measure. Nice
Tl:Dr - it was ok
So after a false start due to a calf niggle around Easter, I decided at the beginning of the week I’d give this a crack.
Was going to start at 8am Friday, but when I realised that would mean a morning finish I changed to start on Thursday night
I made this decision on the way to the pool, before doing 30 x 100m and then leg presses.
Did an hour on Zwift after work to flush the legs and off we went.
Wasn’t sure whether to “publicise” I was doing it in case of failure, but decided to tell some people and of course the good folk here for some accountability.
Had no idea if I was going to be able to do this.
Yes, I’ve done a lot of running due to Covid, but I was coming back off an injury and also have a tendency to sack stuff off if I’m not feeling it.
The latter point was another reason to try this.
I think I have started walking in an IM when I could probably push on
Now I do live alone, which means no disruption to anyone other than Henry (cat) but also means no support crew.
One thing in my favour is that I’m a napping God. I can literally sleep anywhere if tired (have been known to lay in a side office at work and doze off for 20 minutes) so knew I could get reasonable pockets of sleep and not be disturbed, again due to living alone.
Kit wise I was going to use my Next% and then just my normal run gear (long sleeves, shorts, visor/cap)
Kit was washed 4 times in total, with the rest of the time it just chucked in the tumble dryer.
I always run listening to something, so had podcasts and music to keep the brain engaged.
Nutrition wise was nothing complicated.
Some extra carbs with dinner, then nothing until after the 8am run
EAA powder in water rather than recovery shakes as to not have stuff sloshing.
Lunch on Thursday/Friday was omelette and toast
Tried to not guzzle gels, sports drink or caffeine until I felt it was needed.
Other than some jelly beans and the can of Rockstar, I’ve not gone full race mode.
Had a couple of routes at home to do to add a bit of variety and then the two runs at work.
Pacing as mentioned further up was more about how I felt and just running “normally”
Sometimes when I run “slow” I find it harder, so just used the same 135bpm ceiling I use for all my aerobic runs.
That said, other than run 2, which was bang on 30:00, all the others were at my normal run pace which a lot of the time is dictated by the wind, and all came in below 30 mins.
Mentally this wasn’t the toughest thing ever.
I had a couple of wobbles on runs where I wanted to walk, but mostly it was about getting started.
I set alarms for 30 minutes before each run start time and this was enough to get ready and get the legs moving.
Bottom line.
Was it tough?
Yes.
Would I do it again?
95% no.
Do I think there’s been a benefit?
Yes. Not sure the physical benefits are too great, but it is 48 miles in 2 days.
The ability to keep going I think will be a bigger one.
Next stupid challenge is either 100 x 100m of 2:00 or 10k pull and paddles
Mental.
Well done, enjoyed following this.
I should thank everyone here and on Strava for the support
Top work @funkster and good to know (re the willpower thread) that you’ve got that willpower in bags. Something like that with no real accountability other than yourself is tough.
Enjoy your next few days of sleep!
Nice work and sone interesting challenge ideas getting floated.
Well played @funkster, amazing consistency!
@gingerbongo Thanks dude. Think if I lived with someone they’d have talked me out of it
@Duckhen I need to stop doing challenges
@APM That bit I was proud of
If I lived on my own I would deffo be an alcoholic so …probably still a triathlete but alcohol dependent for sure which might hamper my chances of finishing such challenges but vastly increase my willingness to enter!
Alcohol and a credit card makes me think I am Superman!
Yeah I’ve just planned my Sunday ride on a few beers again. Last time it was far from what my original intention was!
Great work and nice write up. Seems like good training for keeping on going when you maybe don’t want to.
As for other stuff, I’ve done 100x100m swim a few times. I’m around the hour for IM and off 2 mins is good and also easy to time. Just swim 100m and go on the next top. Get out after 3h20m. Good to do with a friend as you get a 10s conversation at the end of each 100m and then the whole next 100m to think of an answer.
Anyway, well done on 4448
What are those?
Er, I’m a database programmer. Don’t ask me about what friends are.
Wow he actually went and did it! Good effort! Amazing work.
Well done funkster!
Few drinks on Christmas Day was what led to me entering great North swim 10km about 4 years after I stopped swimming. Once I’d enjoyed that and wanted a bigger endurance challenge it was part of how I ended up entering Outlaw.
As for the 100x100, classic set although I never did do it. My training partner did it NYE 2010 off 1:15 (in a 14k set total). Doubt he heard Big Ben that year
