A Tribute to Planet X

lack of or not bothering I’m not sure. To comply with the UCI wheel list (which WT uses for elite races) wheels must have passed crash criteria that UCI set. Whether PX have failed this, or PX have never even bothered applying/submitting, I don’t know, but just sufficient to say when it comes to PX wheels - computer says No. But, yes, I know of many who have had PX wheels without problems - but then maybe they’ve not had a major crash with them.

and FWIW - if you want to know if your wheels are UCI approved - wheellist.info. Also comes as an app which is handy when at events and no interweb.

ETA: this only applies to draft legal races so people are free to use PX wheels in non-draft races.

I bought a PX road bike in 2007, £1k with Ultegra on C2W and it only cost me £500. I put 10k mikes on it and raced Half Ironman Monaco on it but I can’t find a single picture. It wasn’t a beautiful bike but it rode well enough. My gravel bike right now is a PX/On One Pickenflick Ti frame. My backpacking stove is one of their knock-off Jet Boils. Fair thee well PX, may you rest in cut-price peace.

Didn’t PX get into Ti at one stage?

They had a brief deal with Lynskey in US to import and rebadge one of their MTB frames. Nowadays they have a Ti gravel frame the Tempest which is direct from a Chinese factory. It’s a good value gravel/CX bike.

First time I was aware of them was a uni and a guy who lived downstairs had a Planet-X mountain bike that looked the tits… and I’ve just been on their webside and it seems you can buy a Jack Flash 25th anniversary frame for £70.

I’m an overweight 40 year old, I have no use for a Dirt-Jump bike.

But I’m really tempted to buy it.

Big fan of the Proline/365 clothing they do, quality is every bit as good as the premium brands.

Also the Carnac shoes fit me really well.

What might be telling is that I generally wear Rapha or Castelli shirts over the top, the bits people see.

I’ve got an absolute stash of their baselayers - tempted to stock up if I knew there was no risk ordering in the current climate.
I also found there helmets fitted me better than any main brand - just retired a 6 year old carnac one that cost me under £15!!!

Guy who owns a local bike shop commented that I got two items from plan x / Merlin to stick on one of my tt bikes “ that’s cheaper than I can get them trade?!”

He then said plan x “ didn’t make financial sense “ but some people involved would make a shit load of cash “ while it lasts”

Bought a few bits off them over the years, always good products

I was going to comment that I’d be riding a bit faster than that there.

First thing I bought associated with Planet-X.
(Think this was around 2006/07 ish, but can’t remember.)

And I bought this second hand a week ago.

@FatPom @Jorgan @Hammerer – I think Andy / @Redbiker was part of the initial Planet X set up.

I also had a bike fitting with him at this Bike Science shop in Bristol.

Prior to the 2005 IMUK, Andy knew ‘most’ of the people in the UK who had done an IM. :astonished:
(It was such a rare thing back in those days.)

Cheers, Paul.

I asked a local store for a quote on an Ultegra groupset a few years ago, one of the store staff, who I used to ride with on Wednesday evenings pulled me aside and told me that he had seen the request and binned it - they were buying it all in from Merlin at the website price.

I went direct to Merlin obvs.

With a bit of effort I think that rear derailleur cable could be longer!

Really nice looking bike though.

I can’t even remember the part but Paul Hewitt said “I’ll have that “ about something I’d just bought from Merlin and said I’d “ keep as a spare” he gave me as good as cash off my bike bill that month.

Obviously I LOVE Merlin as they gave me 300+ packets of ood shot bloks … for nowt ! One of them will be powering my hyrox type circuit in an hour ! Lol

Ahh I remember now ! Gold chain !! Cheaper than he could get hem from supply, you have to feel fur LBS”s sometimes !

I had that Jersey, plus the ‘S2’ (Spencer Smith) trishorts.

Got me one of those second hand from a guy who upgraded to a Cervelo (not the wheels on that one though)

Has been sat on my Computrainer since my last IM

Perhaps showing my age….

Yeah a few years ago they were selling chains dirt cheap. KNC ones I think. I bought four 10x ones for the spares box. SRAM TT shifters too… they used to sell those vastly cheaper that RRP, below even eBay prices second hand.
