Yeah that sounds like the beginning of the end and is going to hurt at some point soon, time a new one.
£45 notes for a ring
£85 for a crankset (and can tweak the gearing and try shorter crank arms… Tho how beneficial that is away from TT bike )
When I nearly go over the bars (from a standing start) I know the chainring needs changing. I couldn’t get a smimano ring a coupkle of years ago so got some other compatible brand (not sure what it was) which has been fine. I’ve been really pleased with the tiagra on my Allez winter bike, bullet proof considering the lack of cleaning (I’m not brave enough to put a picture on here in its current state).
Junior needs a new outer chainring. 9 speed shimano Sora on a £600 decathlon Triban bike. Won’t be much I though lt … £40 just for the chainring. Got to be some price gouging going on there, a mass produced single piece of alloy.
If you havent bought it already there are reasonable alternative chainrings which are cheaper.
compatible? I guessed that there might be but didn’t want to take the chance
Oh my.
So. Just swapping the chain wheel.
Went to to add some grease to the axle. Dunno if needed but always done it.
Hmm this axle feels a bit gritty. Wipe down re apply grease… And gritty. Wtf.
Considering I’d spent 5 mins looking for the grease in a box smaller than a shoe box… somewhat disappointing I’d come away with carbon friction paste.
I didn’t even know I had carbon friction paste
That’ll cost you a few watts
It’s ok it’s the commuter… If it was the turbo bike we’d be throwing it away and getting a new bike
Oops. Chain link lose and caught on the mech?
Not sure, was just riding up a hill in the saddle and my back wheel locked up. Stopped and found the mech flipped round and through the wheel. Mech hanger looked like a banana.
Managed to take off mech and ‘persuade’ the hanger back to a reasonable shape with a handy roadside rock.
15 mile ride home stuck in 1 gear making a hell of a noise was interesting.
Maybe should be in the rant thread, but whilst I was hitting it with rock, 2 separate cyclist passed me and didn’t even ask if I was okay, tw***s.
This has happened to me a few times on mountain bikes. Good that you rigged it to get home.
Only fix is to open the wallet I am afraid.
Only fix is to open the wallet I am afraid.
That seems to be the case, think I’ve found a compatible hanger, need rear mech and chain by the looks.
Still not convinced that the dropout end of the frame isn’t also bent, which would be terminal, but no option but to replace everything and see.
I should also go to the rant thread, but I just want to say that threading fucking brake cable in an Athena shifter is a count.
Old torches with batteries welded inside are also counts.
There’s a whole bunch of counts, is what the theme of this maintenance activity is.
He’s a count too.
Same happened to me in March. But also broke two spokes and gouged carbon frame. All because the shop I bought the bike from (new) had screwed out both derailleur limit screws to their limit. I shouldn’t have assumed that they were competent at building bikes.
Hope your frame is ok.
Finally got the front brake cable threaded - the bastard.
May approach the rear cable later today.
Are there any rules about cable routing? It’s been ages since I Fettled Bikes and I vaguely remember making one unsteerable!
Two torches are still fucked.
Put bar tape on the back up roadie. Slowly building it into a rideable shape.
Edit
Removed, cleaned and replaced the chainrings today.
Any idea why that won’t go back in? Feels like the thread is not quite aligning so it gets real tight, real quick and looks a tad wonky. I’ve tried it loads of times and not getting much joy. And yes, I know the crank arm is missing, was trying it without to see if it made any difference.
And no I don’t care about the dirt and stuff - I have limited time as it is.
As you describe it’s not the wonk & needs to go on straight. Likely the 1st thread or 2 of the plastic bit is damaged, take it out & see if you can see the damage. If you can then clean it up with a file or Stanley knife.
