Bike Maintenance for Beginners

This is my top tip for getting tubeless to seat. Might not work on a road tyre - never tried - but I’ve always got gravel/MTB tyres to seat just with a cheap track pump by doing this. There’s a bit of a knack to it and it’s easy to have the bead come off behind your thumb, but if you do it right it is almost like pumping up a tyre with a tube in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE3h4nmDdOo

I always take out the valve core & put the sealant in there with a 100ml syringe & tube. I hate to imagine the mess I’d make pouring it into an unseated tyre.

I need to remember to look at my bike if I want to get out this weekend, I think the cable has just come loose at the rear mech as I couldn’t feel much movement when I was moving the shifter.

Otherwise I’m stuck on the 11 tooth :grimacing:

Do co2 canisters “expire”?

I got a big batch years and years ago but rarely need them. Tried one the other day and nothing came out. A second one worked. Both looked sealed before use.

I mean they’re sealed units with gas so they should last!

I thought my bottom bracket/chainring/chain was giving me a creak that I could feel through the pedals on my commute.

Turns out it was the pedals themselves :joy:. Replaced by a pair I had in the garage & all is smooth again :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:.

What they should look like :pinched_fingers:

What mine looked like….Shimano erased completely & the front worn a bit as well :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

All that power :flexed_biceps:

Fork me. Internal cable routing can get in the sea. I’ve manifest the hell out of it. Still no luck.

Right. Stuck aluminium post in a knackered carbon frame.

  1. leave it and buy a new post
  2. I have tried mallets, vice grip and twist, penetrating oil, heat gun.

Ammonia?
Drain cleaner?
Vinegar?

Also interested to see if there’s any recommendations……

I’ve given up and stolen one from another bike for now.

Also, given up on internal cable routing and removing YET ANOTHER bottom bracket standard :face_with_symbols_on_mouth::face_with_symbols_on_mouth::face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

Give up sounds like the best idea, I had one years ago and eventually got it loose, I think just repeated goes off brute force and WD40 :joy: I bought some paste after that!

Yeah. Easy removing it from the frame.

It’s still in the frame!

Tried gently heating the seat tube?

Hairdryer?

I tried ungently heating it. And NOSing it, due to the lack of dry ice.

Frame was a write off anyhow. BB shell had disintegrated and the rear brake mount is cracked. That’s what the creaking was, which I couldn’t resolve :rofl::rofl:

Going to get a hacksaw blade vertically on the tube. As I don’t own a Dremel…

Lidl have some bike maintenance things including a torque wrench, pumps, cleaning stuff if people are interested.

There’s also a cordless compressed air pump, but I think it’s limited to 4 inflation settings :man_shrugging:t2:

I bought one of the pumps this morning, seems to work well, but it’s a heavy lump, not something you would ever take with you on a ride.

Not bad for £12

The track pump or compressed air pump?

Electric one.

the four settings are for different uses, car, bike etc.

You can set the needed pressure and it stops when reached. I checked the numbers against my Topeak digital gauge, it was pretty accurate.

Team, welcome your opinion.

Putting the feelers out to possibly sell my Canyon plodder.

Aluminum Endurance 7 (think @fruit_thief has the same bike). Bought in 2021 (or maybe 2022?), doneless than 250 miles, doesn’t have a scratch.

What do you think I could reasonably get for it?
