Brownlee to race Ironman Ireland

I am thinking more of riptides

From the looks of the map the swim is sheltered from the usual South Westerly wind, but this winds looks Easterly from the forecast.

It was an Easterly that created the horror swim at Tenby in 2014.

Ironman Ireland 2020 might be an easy KQ - people are going to watch this on FB live and think ‘not me pal’…

Could be worse; they could make Perranporth a full distance event.

Those are really tough conditions, it’s going to be a difficult race. I know someone that is trying the IM distance for the first time in this race :frowning:

If it was easy, they’d call it football

See I don’t think the weather is tough, it’s just slower. You just have to adjust your goals appropriately.

Well, I guess that’s right. I think you also need to be quite experienced to know how to pace yourself when the conditions are tough. Specially for the long distance.

How are those conditions tough? Not too windy and temperatures are moderate. I would suggest that they are in fact perfect!

They would be spot-on for the run; for your average Irish/UK person.

Uhmm… for me that is very windy, but again, probably that depends on each person’s abilities. I am not good at cycling in the wind.

And in general cycling in wet roads is not great either.

Temperatures are moderate but the cold will get you on the bike if it rains continuously, hour after hour and it’s unpleasant. Course is lumpy and road surfaces not good; a few will come off.

Softened feet will be vulnerable to blisters on the run.

It will be a tough day. Survivable, but tough and it’ll weed out the ill prepared and those who do not adjust for the conditions.

So the IMJers while been sampling the Irish hospitality all week :speak_no_evil:

Hopefully he can get his kit to match his bike for this one. Instead of that offensive red kit, blue/green bike combo :face_vomiting:

He’s there !
Really looking forward to this…?!
I think you have to be a paid up member if IMJ to watch though…

…Rumours of a shortened swim course. Obvs panic ensues on IMJ but I am slightly disappointed not to see Brownlee across the full distance.

Decision to be made at 05:30 tomorrow.

Post some screenshots…

…I was thinking the other day; I’d be totally peeved if I entered an IM and each leg was short. And I mean;

3.6km swim
177km bike
40km Run

That’s like 20 minutes quicker.

I think that’s FAR WORSE than have an officially short course or duathlon type IM event.

Nah. I’m sure others have heard this argument more times than I have, but there’s no merit in it. It’s not a distance, it’s not an event, it’s an Ironman race. Even if you’re last, you’re still racing. 20 minutes faster for you might be 10 or 30 minutes for another.

And if the course is shortened because it’s made dangerous by weather, you’re still on the start line with hundred if not thousands of others suffering the same thing.

I wouldn’t agree. Ironman is a distance, like a marathon. I don’t expect everything to be exact, but if I set a PB on an obviously short course, it’s diminished. If someone is one & done at Bolton last year, the same.

I also prefer calling them events, rather than races. How many people are actually racing?

It’s properly kicking off on the IM Ireland Fbook as well.

“I won’t be an Ironman”

That’s a 99% IM
Better than most, a guy did a crazy time at Bolton last year.
Middle 9 ish…
But said he would only do one…

He’s not about anymore so can only assume that was his one full distance race
