The swim & bike aren’t bad, but why is the run 2k short? Surely it’s not difficult to use a few cones and do u turns…seems lazy
I didn’t mean Ireland - those distances I made up.
The point I’m failing to make is that;
If I do an event with those distances, and it’s billed as a 3.8/180/42.2, but comes up way short, I’d be pissed off.
If I did a 9:28, but extrapolation meant I still did a 9:50, it’s just not real is it? Who know what an extra 3 minutes of swimming can do, or 10 minutes on the bike, or 15 minutes on the run.
If any leg is curtailed due to circumstances and it’s a safety call, then that’s cool. Everyone knows that race was an “impacted” race.
But massively short courses piss me off.
The example I gave above isn’t that much on each leg, but adds up to a significant amount of time overall.
The 113 is the closest I’ve ever done to actual distance over middle.
Outlaw is frustratingly accurate
Can’t really go wrong measuring that swim.
They even had the bloody run course measured by a calibrated bike in the first year.
Short courses are pretty frustrating but then again so are long…when you pays your hundreds of pounds it’s a minimum requirement that course distances are accurate surely.
I seem to get a mixture of long swims (not just sighting issues, honest!) short bikes and close to expected runs in general. Mostly, I think it’s just laziness rather than incompetence.
I suppose you just can’t compare performances due to so many variances.
And yet a short hop across the Irish Sea and the weather is glorious. I think most of the concerns about this event on the old TriTalk 1.0 thread have come to pass, and the gun hasn’t gone yet.
Just looked at the forecast for Youghal. Rain from 4am…all day Although Roth was like that in 2008, and it was colder. Canal swim obvs, and decent roads.
Facebook comments are hilarious.
The locals are all chipping in stating the air and sea temperatures are not a surprise all.
Seems like IM/WTC/WANDA are the only people to which this a surprise.
Swim has been cancelled
Looks okay on the live video
Was looking for a shot of the water but tuned in too late
You couldn’t have surfed them, that’s how flat it was.
Gutted for all folk who have suffered to get to the line…
One of those things…!
It’s the air temp that’s key @fatbuddha will know more but if it’s below a certain level the water temp is “adjusted” and could take it below minimum. Last thing they need is safety crews dealing with cases of hypothermia.
Just had a quick look on the FB feed. Looks absolutely grim.
Scrubs Ireland off bucket list
Yeah it’s hardly surprising.
15° but rain and 21mph wind.
Coverage is just as grim. A traffic cone and a shed.
It was worse at Hever Castle last autumn.
The coverage is particularly poor! I guess the TT start has confused who they should follow… although you would think AB would be a safe bet
Tracker shows Phil Graves is yet to start?
He’s confirmed as not racing.
21% wet hill, zig zagging all over the place with a slipping back wheel. Nice
Vanhoenaker is a DNF. Too cold.
The tracker and commentary seem out of sync. AB showing 3rd on tracker at 115km and 2nd according to the Ironman comments?
The top 10 men at km 115:
1 Mccrystal, Bryan (IRL) 02:49:42
2 Brownlee, Alistair (GBR) +03:17
3 Thomschke, Markus (GER) +03:21
4 Bosch, Thomas (GER) +13:16
5 Schramm, Till (GER) +14:11
6 Hovgaard, Esben (DEN) +15:47
7 Kalashnikov, Ivan (RUS) +16:09
8 Odeyn, Seppe (BEL) +17:04
9 Drake, Robert (GBR) +18:37
10 Overmars, Steff (NED) +19:41
Either way looks good for AB starting the run.
