CICO is Lies - Dr Noakes

I don’t think anyone has ever shown that you can maintain and positve energy balance/calorie excess and lose flab have they?

I know garmin massively over estimates my BMR and if I was to use that, or similar, to help maintain a calorie deficit I (or it) would fail miserably.

Sort of, I have tried using MAF to start, just as a guide (nose breathing isnt far off at about 135 ish anyway) 132 for me at 48 but I do relax it to about 137 which seems to be where it settles generally on the flat at a shuffle, and after 2 weeks, 5 runs (1 did have some hard stuff in yesterday) I am walking less on the flatter routes and running a little faster for HR. anything of 1% climb though and the rate shoots up to mid 140’s though.

Our Son (9) is carrying quite a lot of puppy fat. He’s active, but loves his carbs like pasta. He doesn’t have much in the way of sweets or chocolate etc; he just eats too fast and we need to reduce his portions I think.

It depresses me when I see what other kids shovel in and they are no more active than him, and stay skinny.

Both my kids shovel food and in and despite our best efforts dont have a great diet. My eldest would put fat on , then shoot up in height a few times, last time though she seemed to retain the fat.

My youngest is a lot more active, she uses the treadmill 3 times a day, although she does short bursts of sprinting as thats fun and she is skinny as anything

I was pretty chubby until I was 13. Then I didn’t really think about what i ate and stayed skinny.

Until I was about 30. Which was a shame!

I’m finally putting weight on from being able to eat infinite amount as a kid :sob: people have said it would happen for the last 15 years.

I have a very good diet, and managed to maintain swimmer weight + 2kg from 20 to 30, but now it’s creeping despite no changes.

Just heard this in a discussion about CICO:

“You can’t outrun your fork”

Not sure I’ll be using it conversation any time soon though

I was getting hungry, drank 250ml water and now not hungry. Need to do more of this rather than heading to the fridge whenever I get a hunger twinge.

That’s weird.

It’s showing in “recently played” on one device, but doesn’t seem to be available anymore. :man_shrugging:t2: Not on his website so maybe it’s been taken down.

I thought I was pretty good, but I’ve got to eat more, more often.

yes listened yesterday to it, nothing mind blowing and lots of “it depends” as anyone good in their field should say. hopefully it gets across the point that we need more protein, especially as we age. Most people dont get anywhere near enough (me included)

Oh and that it really is about CICO

Because of caloric availability? As opposed to calculating the calories put in your mouth which is how many people calculate it.

partly, but the calories you put in your mouth ultimately end up the available calories. but “it depends”

such a shame such topics always end up with polarised simple arguments (its cico/its not cico) when as with most things theres a spectrum that creates the simple argument at either end. yes its cico, but that cico equation is different for everyone and affected by many different things.

I thought the science behind protein having a lower percentage of the calories in the item available to the body was fairly well proven and accepted as compared to carbs especially simple carbs.
