I’ve got a pair of Castelli neoprene gloves @gingerbongo they’re alright but you’ll sweat like a bastard in them and get wet hands.
They’re also terrible in proper hard downpours.

Also with overshoes. Splash some cash on some Spatz.
Fast tyres is about all it’s worth upgrading, I imagine they are very heavy and slow. Alex make fine rims, there’s nothing really to be had there.
Whatever you do it’s gonna be a heavy old touring thing!
Dynamo is the other quality upgrade that’s worth doing on any sort of winter bike.
I’m sure neoprene is only worth it in proper full on rain, but I use paddling gloves not the “bike” version, and you should carry a liner glove, and a seperate one for the return - the decathlon couple of quid “hiking” knit gloves are good for this.
Ok cheers. Probably get four season contis or gators on, if they do 28s.
Claris and tektro are crap but they do look bullet proof, which is of more value on this. Campag would be preferable.
Castelli/race gear doesnt really look right on an italian tourer, so Im looking for a more classic jacket. Holdsworth looked good but they only have XXL jackets.
Don’t know if you bought any overshoes or not … but i found these on the weekend and bought a pair for Mrs GB as she went on Sat and was suffering from really cold toes:
I’ll let you know what they’re like when they arrive this week.
Watching with interest
These are decent, I had some for a couple of years before I bought the Fizik boots
I use castelli neoprene overshoes, but in the depths of winter I just accept the loss of sensation in the toes on anything longer than an hour.
Lovely weather over here, but getting cold.
Yesterday morning Zugerberg climb, it was -1 at the top
This morning on my ride to Zurch was 2 degrees
Still in my autumn kit, with extra thermal vest and winter gloves, however, feet getting cold, so have to get full winter kit out soon
Heck!
It was 6 degrees on the dog walk this morning and we all certainly felt the cold at that!
Anyone who uses SPDs for commute use a trail shoe rather than a MTB shoe??
I much prefer SPDs just for the sheer number of times I need to clip in/out. But I don’t need the studs/grip that come with MTB shoes (which I’ve worn for 10+ years).
Anyone run trail shoes? Any disadvantages? See you can get some Goretex ones etc
Welcome any previous experience… dont really care what I look like; but seems more practical on the face of it (and toe covers more likely to fit without being stretched to the max (size 47 )
I use a pair of Specialized ‘trainers’ that have a really stiff, but not quite solid sole (and an SPD cleat). Its recessed properly, so they are useable for a while off the bike, such as going into a shop. I‘ve also got a pair of MTB shoes with SPD cleats, and barely use them now…
Although I probably had another winter of riding left on my crosser’s jockey wheels I decided to spoil myself & change them.
How do you get those nails so short
@jeffb wire snips
Christ I feel bilious.
good word.
a touch of bathos here.
