I wasn’t aware you had to travel back to the UK to go back over to France to start the bike. But does seem obvious now thinking about passport formalities required! I guess taking the ferry is the quickest option here?

You don’t. Pilot takes us in to Calais harbour

Without really understanding it, 9 hours and 5 hours seem like a long time for T1 or T2. Are there any time gains to be had there, or is that basically as fast as it can be done?

Don’t they have a set departure slot for the channel, so I think that one is largely fixed. You’re making a judgement call when to depart the Arch and start the clock ticking. If you arrive early, you’re still stuck with the same crossing start time. But arrive late and you’re f**ked. So it’s a balancing act as to how accurately you can predict the duration of the run, plus factor in whatever rest time you need before the mammoth swim.

T2 I imagine is partially driven by the trip to Calais ejc refers to and some admin, and partially by what rest/sleep an individual might deem necessary before the long cycle.

T1 is waiting for the right swim conditions and recovering from the run. 9 hours sounds quite short, under the circumstances.

I guess T2 is recovering from swimming for 13 hours straight

There is a balance between the very necessary recovery and not seizing up.

It’s an individual thing but we have imposed minimum rest periods this year for the first time. They are 3 hours but about to be increased to 6

There is a maximum rest of 48 hours from run start in Dover and 12 hours from landing in Calais.

We work with the athlete to establish the best timings based on the meet the boat time.

This is often 24 hours for run and 12 hours T1

Swim departure is fixed before the run begins.

9 hours goes very quickly. 90 mins after run and 90 mins up for breccy means a max of 6 asleep

Pulled Beth from the water some 8 hours and 52 minutes in…

Rotterdam or anywhere
Liverpool or Rome

Hang a left, back up the Thames, Grand Union Canal, Trent and Mersey canal, that’s Liverpool sorted by next Tuesday at this rate.

Not sure about Rome  and she’d be pickled for sure.

Those channel currents / tides are pretty crazy, can’t get my head around how far off a straight line swimmers have to go

depends on how fast they are…and the tides…
