Everest record gone again

From what I can see of the recent everests, it seems people don’t really “train” specifically for it. They just use their fitness and go and do it. I’d need to put in a couple of longer bike rides though, haven’t got a lot of endurance in the legs. The time almost correlates to an Ironman. The Everest record is 7:30something, reckon for me without a huge amount of specific training that a sub-10 might just about be possible (but this might be waaaaay off!), and some of the early pioneers were doing 13-14 hours. I said years and years ago that I’d love to do a day where I climb the height of Everest on a bike. Missed a trick!

I only know because I watched GCN last night. Of course, to do the descending, you have to do the climbing. Unless you have a season pass for Whistler A Line :smile:

You say your wife won’t be that sympathetic but you have the CTL of a pro cyclist/triathlete so I reckon she’s about as sympathetic as anyone out there!!

A 4 mile stretch of the A30 in Dorset formed part of my bike commute for 6 years. It was as you say grim. Particularly as riding East in the mornings and west in the evenings, which is into the sun both ways. Drivers get dazzled.

Thankfully I ditched all that last year and now work a short walk from home. Bike miles have fallen off a cliff but that’s another story…

I did LE-JOG a good while ago. Took the scenic route. When I arrived to JOG the front page newspaper headline was about a cyclist who had been killed in a collision a few miles into his JOG-LE, presumably the previous day. Put such a dampener on things. I was already peeved at having to pay the sign man for a photo at the sign, and then I saw the headline and I was peeved at myself for being peeved.

You’d think that his Strava activity having hundreds or metres less ascent than needed would have raised more alarm bells than it did, putting it down to a “data lag with the elevation” made no sense

well you say that, but we have a local climb witrh a segment (running) and Strava thinks it dips at the top, whereas it’s a trig point! So i don’t think they’d have installed it in a dip! You can see the maximum elevation that it peaks at from the topographical lines on an OS map, yet Strava under reports it.

Actually, the shortest version of the climb (just the peak itself) is downhill according to Strava!

Oh I agree, the ascent values in strava are not particularly accurate. But his explanation for why his activity showed less ascent than required made zero sense - “data lag”, it’s not as though your activity is going to continue acruing ascent once you’ve stopped is it :joy:

I think it would have been much worse if he was way out in front and would have got the record other than this elevation error. However, he was only 7mins ahead, and actually still had 350m or more to climb, so no way he would have got the record.

When is did an Everest 2 years ago, it took me 18 hours (in pouring rain). Course was 290km so quite a bit longer, but I am trying to get my head around doing it in less than half the time.

110kmh on a straight descent probably helps?

There’s a hill near me which is something like 900m long at 10% incline, just doing the maths to see if a half-everest is within the realms of achievabilty.

Guess it would be about 50 repeats, for 90km in total up and down. Hmmm.

I have found a good climb for my next everest attempt

It is 2.72km with 242m elevation 9% avg and relatively easy descent. The challenge would be to do 37 reps each in 16mins to finish in under 10 hours - doable? I would need to average 260w on the climbs and descend at 50kph. Each 8 reps I could take a 5 min break

Descent has one long straight portion, and is not too technical in the rest
