Garmin questions

I used to use a Garmin Swim years ago, not sure if its improved any but it was bobby basic and I didnt like it.

The Epix Gen 2 I have are still out there for not much, I think its a great watch and works fine when swimming

I just use my 965 for everything, very rarely misses a lap when swimming and accuracy in open water seems very good.

Use it as my daily watch as well, doesn’t feel too bulky on my wrist and counts steps etc

I used to have a 310XT which sunk just after the start of IM Lanza 2019. I then replaced it with a 735XT which I’ve been really happy with since. I wanted another multisport watch at the time although it turns out that Lanza 2019 was my most recent triathlon :joy:

Last week the start/stop button on my 735 decided it didn’t want to play ball any more. It worked maybe 1% of the time, and then sometimes would just start (or stop) a run on it’s own. I tried soaking it in warm water, shaking it, doing a factory reset (which is really difficult when the button you need to press to confirm doesn’t work!). I suspect taking the watch out windsurfing hasn’t helped much with the salt water and sometimes rather forceful impact of the watch to the water during unexpected high speed dismounts.

I’ve spent much of the weekend looking at different watches and thinking about what I want. My requirements are basic running, pool/open-water swimming as I might swim a handful of times a year and it’s nice to know what I’ve done. Maybe using it on my bike (so needs to see my power meter) if my bike computer dies (Garmin 705 from 2010). Not overly fussed about multisport. Oh, and I’d like to use it windsurfing.

I thought about two GPS watches (a cheapo one for windsurfing) and have read loads of different DC Rainmaker reviews. I then saw the posts from @Jorgan about the Epix Pro gen2 at CEX and it’s 5 year warranty. I like the idea of the amoled screen and possibly the sleep metrics too. It also has decent water resistance which will be most welcome.

I’ve just decided that at £280 it’s gotta be worth a punt as I think it will tick all my boxes. Thanks for mentioning it (and to those here who have one and are happy with it).

I haven’t been impressed with battery life tbh; that said I went from a 51mm Tactix to this being 47mm. But my 935 also seems to be much better. A full charge purportedly gives me 6 days battery life as a smartwatch with HR on (no pulse ox); that’s with fairly light training use. I do have an IQ watch face installed (on gesture), because the stock ones are awful. Using a HRM strap for long events might help quite a bit I suppose.

There are quite a few battery life gripes online; fine in my situation but probably not a good choice for ultra runners etc if you want to use the internal HRM. I guess mine must be about 2y old.

I get about 3 days out of my 965 if I use it regularly, cycling etc, a bit longer if it’s just an expensive wristwatch.

Makes you wonder what’s going on with the newer watches - crappy firmware, hungry apps?

It’s the screen, the 955 lasted ages but the 970 doesn’t last anywhere near as long. I do find it a bit annoying

AMOLED?

High resolution colour screens eat a lot of power.

My Hammerhead Karoo has an amazing colour screen, but compared to my old Garmin Edge 1000 the battery life is terrible if you use it in navigation mode with the map open

My screen is usually in low-power mode though unless I tilt my wrist i.e. it’s dimmed in black & white with very little detail. Definitely seems like a ‘feature’ people don’t necessarily need.

Same. Mine is completely black when not in use. Though the tilt is often unresponsive on mine, which is quite annoying.

I’ve now developed a weird habit for when I have my other hand full to touch the watch face on my nose to wake it up. :joy:

Lol I use my nose too :joy:

Are the CIA and the Russians tracking you permanently on GPS and Glonass?

A high profile military asset like you would be of interest to both

High profile?

Maybe high value?

Not if you have sleep settings enabled. Mine disables at 10pm until 0700. (you have to press a physical button).
