Garmin questions

Yeah, the numbers are written on in felt tip pen.

The watch is guaranteed to be right twice a day :rofl:

If it’s in Geordie you’re gonna need a translator though :joy:

It arrived :raised_hands:t2:

Not had a chance to have a play yet but seems like a very nice upgrade quality wise over the 735xt

Started getting adverts for their latest bike computers today.

Argh, I plugged my watch into the Laptop and updated using Express yesterday. Now the ANT+ dongle won’t talk to Zwift. Can’t remember how to fix this.

I have already rebooted Zwift and removed the Dongle, made sure Express isn’t running… to no avail.

I remember having that once, I think Express doesn’t play nice with anything else.
I’m not 100% sure but think I might have uninstalled Express to get the dongle working with other programs again.
Ps. I’ve never used Zwift but had other trainer related software.
ETA - found this from a quick Google
Only one program on your computer can “own” your ANT+ dongle at any given time, so make sure you aren’t running any programs that use ANT+ dongles. The most common culprit here is Garmin’s software, “Garmin Express”.

Thanks, will try. I found the facility in Express to connect to a device, but it’s not detecting anything. Laptop makes a ping when I connect/disconnect.

I’ve got a feeling that Express is really difficult to turn off and is sneakily running even when you think it isn’t so the only way to be sure is uninstall it; then put it back on again if you ever need it again in the future.

I got a warning from Zwift saying Express was conflicting/running. But I’m sure that I needed to install the dongle via Express on this laptop when I got it last year (the laptop).

ETA - found the dongle now has ‘no drivers installed’ how odd.

Problem for Zwift is BT doesn’t seem to detect my Garmin Tactix, which is odd, because BT works with my phone (I have disabled phone connection & tried with Zwift).

I don’t really know much more about it sorry. I remember having an issue and it was to do with Garmin Express, which I think I solved by uninstalling it.
Maybe one of the more techy guys can give further advice re drivers etc.

SORTED. Finally. Ended up reinstalling Express and restarting yet again. Somehow the drivers came back, but it’s now telling me I can install the latest European Topo map…which is what I did yesterday :man_facepalming::sweat_smile:

Which watch uses Express to update?

I can’t remember when I last updated a device using anything other than Bluetooth through my phone :man_shrugging:

My Tactix. I use it for those 90min map downloads. Everything else is done via phone.

Yo!

My cycle head unit, Edge 520 Plus, is great for what I normally use it for, but the route mapping is GARBAGE :rage::sob:

It only lasts 7 hours with a map on.
Plus, it’ll only remember 100 (or 200?) waypoints, making it ultra-garbage off road :sob:

I don’t use power off road (just HR) and never have that stupid auto-routing on, plus I turn on smart recording.

Basically, I’ll be doing 150km per day for a four days soon, and I’m petrified of it crashing / not lasting a day.

Plan is to have a lunch stop and recharge it then.
And to split each day into two parts (before and after lunch) to prevent it crashing / losing my route.

Is it time to bite the bullet and buy a Wahoo?
I barely use mapping for road, just remember the route and write the harder directions onto a sticky label on my stem :face_with_peeking_eye::joy:

I used my Edge 520 (not plus) for 200km audaxes and the battery lasted 12 hours easily. Although my OH’s 520 Plus seemed to have worse battery life.

We’re both on 530s now which are a good bit of kit, navigation way better than the 520 Plus and battery life is at least 12 hours maybe 15

My fenix 6S doesn’t last 14hrs of an Ironman off a full charge.

I will try to run faster so it doesn’t die on me at Frankfurt.

However, are there recommended settings to minimise battery use and still record decent data?

Its GPS that kills the battery. There is a setting called smart recording which records fewer data points when stuff changes. I think the default setting is every second which uses a lot more battery. I think some an an ultra setting as well which records a lot less but that overkill for IM.

Other think you can do is record your swim and run on the watch and bike on a bike device if you have one

WOW!!!

My watch lasts forever (well, only ever tested it for 11 hours, but still, that’s forever  )

@r0bh - Thanks. My old non-BTE Edge 500 lasted 13 hours / 262km, but no route, as I just joined up three known routes and did them. I only just bought my 520 Plus two years ago, so I’m in pain buying a new one already

Yeah my 520 plus only lasted a 100 miler with mapping if you were diligent at switching off if stopped.

I’ve just upgraded to the 540 which seems good so far but only had it a week. So expensive though, even with 10% off from Start Fitness thanks to the Deals thread!

On the tin:

  • 25 hours of GPS
  • 50 hours Max Battery tracking

I have HRM and pedal linked to it which will add drain, but I suspect some setting turned on is what’s done it.

On race day I dual record with my Edge 520+
