Trail Running and Ultra Running VO2 Max Estimate

Select devices can provide a VO2 max estimate when using the Trail Running or Ultra Running activity profiles.

  • Ultra Run or Trail Run activity must be 10 minutes or longer.
  • Activity must be recorded outdoors with a GPS signal.
  • Heart rate data must be recorded from a built-in optical heart rate sensor or from a chest strap.
  • Heart rate must be elevated to at least 70% of your maximum heart rate for at least 10 minutes continuously.

NOTE: Support for Trail Run and Ultra Run VO2 max estimates require that your software is up to date. For compatible devices see the list below.

Thought so. Cheers, I tick all those boxes.

Now I’m wondering about my maxHR setting 186. Haven’t been near that for years I don’t think. I think LTHR is approximately right at 165, given my 5 and 10k races so 186 look approximately ok I suppose.

Edit

It seems that some people turn off vo2 estimates from trail runs as it tends to drag the number down.

I guess it makes sense to do that?

I’m racing on road only, so maybe I only want metrics that reflect that. Looks like most/all my long runs will be trail though.

Is that the new Garmin Venu X1 or Apple?

I thought it was your monitor :joy:

Venu

Watched a whole bunch of reviews on it and decided the bigger screen was worth the lower battery life and multiband GPS

The big bright screen and rectangular shape really appeal. And it’s not Apple. I may get one for Christmas :+1:. Let us know if it’s any good…

I’ve gone for the 42" version.

Weight isn’t an issue, it slightly interferes with my arm carriage, but it is worth the small inconvenience due to the clarity of the large screen.

I used to get odd looks when running around Regents Park with circuit boards strapped to my arms.

I was a firmware developer for the TomTom sports watches when they were a thing, the boards were early caseless prototypes with additional debug outputs.

First thoughts are positive

I’m coming from a 945 / 920 / 910 / 310XT / 305 so fully integrated in the Garmin ecosystem.

It only has two buttons - the start/stop and lap. Everything else is done via the screen so will see how that goes later.

It’s super thin with a fabric strap so comfy and can’t really feel it on my wrist.

Display is super bright (I’m on 66% brightness) and I’ve got it on gesture, so lift to get the display to show.

Have used it for a run and swim and no issues.

Worn it overnight twice as well and didn’t know it was there.

Still need to play with some of the features, but this will replace my Apple Watch and 945

My Garmin has been saying 0% for about an hour and is saying critical and won’t do anything except show the time!

forgot to charge it last night.

My last few posts have made me out to be a bit of a muppet :joy:

So no-one uses wahoo or lezyne then?

Haha, saw that earlier! Back to 2006 :joy:

At least life was easier, I ached a bit less and the music was better :joy:

Can we talk about other head units here?

Is anyone else affected by the Wahoo problem? I noticed my Bolt wasn’t giving me speed or distance as I set off yesterday so returned home & picked up my Garmin watch & ran the 2 side by side for the rest of the ride.

My Bolt was fine with temp, cadence, power, hrm etc but anything relating to GPS was dropping in & out so my speed, distance, alt & maps were sketchy.

Sounds like they’re working on a fix over the weekend.

DCR reckons they’ve got a fix but testing it and should be released next week.

Cheers @jeffb I’ll see if I can update now because they’re a pain in the hole if you have to update before a ride.

Unsurprisingly it was quite a long update which took the length of time it took me to eat 3 filled rolls & a large bowl of crisps to install.
