Gravel Riding Chit Chat

Looks like a Fabric LumaRay to me, I’ve got one of them.
But I can’t find them to buy anymore!

These look similar:

They’re expensive for a “be seen” light, but nice and stealth.

I’d say that’s more likely atmospheric conditions than the tyres. Such a small variation is inside confidence limits. And I don’t trust Strava PRs at all. They’re based on the Garmin record function, so can be up to (what is it?) 7 seconds off, if you’ve that’s setting turned on (it is default) - “Smart Recording”

Dunno. But I guess that av speed and power were almost exactly the same, it ‘proves’ something…that I accidentally found a ‘balance point’ between tyre choices on this particular route.

Is @Poet working for GCN?

Gravel is really just reinventing the wheel, to sell more bikes. I like it though.

In simple terms, I’d say ‘performance’ bike categories really fall into these broad categories:

Road
Road TT
Cross (the massive grey zone)
MTB

I should think that ebikes particularly eMTB are the bikes that are pushing the performance & tech envelope these days.

Does gravel think it’s “cool”?

It’s just not, is it?

Cos wearing Lycra is inherently uncool.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s we were riding around the fire roads of the local forestry commission land. Gravel ain’t new even here in the UK

Mid 90s I was hanging around and watching the filming of the seminal “Dirt” film with MBUK, starring Steve Peat, Jason McRoy (RIP), et al.

Gravel is for wimps.
Ergo; uncool.

Mid 90s; I’d already moved onto Triathlon by then.

Mid 90s I was zipping around the Chamonix valley on a MTB on all sorts of tracks from forest gravel to gnarly singletrack

My husband used to be on the MTB with all of them.

If your husband is one of Pete’s mates, too :joy::joy::joy:
Small world indeed!!!

Nah he mostly hung out with the downhillers in early 90s. His mate raced for GB at 94 Vail worlds - so the whole crowd went along.
