That brought back memories I’d suppressed.
Beggars belief
What was once a 15min job is now a 2hr epic.
Plus bar tape too

Oh the days of a buttery smooth external BB, that lasted years.
Like on my Ti MTB and winter road bike.
I’d say square taper JIS is possibly slightly better, but pegged back by their tooling and removal.
So yeah, English 24mm threaded, FTW!
Also, cheap as chips!
Peak for me are this type, for integrated crank/axles axles:
I did half of my IMs on an Ergomo ISIS set-up though.
Oh that brings back memories and dealing with the wires in the 1st gen
Been consuming a lot of YT content looking at bikes pre Unbound. Wow some flash stuff. Seems the short cranks fetish has hit Gravel too now. I think my Endurace has std issue 172.5 on them! I know my TT bike is 170mm which I got when they started gaining traction in Tri.
Don’t know how the GCN guy got on, but I suspect he got fragged and finished well back. Really this was going to be a learning year for him. Also saw Dan Lloyd came through the field in Gralloch quite well. Seems a lot of MAMILs smoke it early on, and fade.
20mph for that
That’s a long day in the saddle at that intensity. Maybe he’ll make the step up to Ironman next
Maybe if I keep riding outdoors on my bike, I might see one of the GCN mob at some point. I often recoginse the roads/towns they feature.
So he only managed to beat 3 of the non-elite but 32 of the elite - the “elite” category doesn’t sound very elite?
There were also certainly way more than 115 riders in the whole event. The Lifetime events seem to have issues with how they report results. Isn’t Unbound the Roth of Gravel?
There were 25, 50, 100, 200 & 350 distances but only elite in the 200.
I have trained the buzzard to attack people without a Yorkshire passport, and that includes poet
So … I’m such a loser I was watching those 2006 Julia Bradbury walking shows last night. She was on Blakey and Richmond etc and I thought - that would be ace for gravelling on.
I know quite a few people who head that way on gravel bikes on a local bike shop group ride. A lot of the Cleveland way around there is very rideable.
An extra 5k or so on yesterday’s ride. I went arse over apex on a 90 deg bend on some singletrack; couldn’t get out of a rut and ended-up with my bike wedged between two trees on a slope and me still attached! It was only later I realised both my tool bottle & drink had ejected itno the undergrowth so had to go back. Just glad I’m still ‘rubbery’ enough despite being over life’s hump!
That thing will grind to a halt at the first sign of mud!
Talking of clearance, I’ve got the 36mm Strada Biancas on my Canyon now. Not ridden yet. Fark me it took best part of 30 min to get the new TLR one on… even with a seating tool! The used one slipped on nicely. Just stretching out the new one with a butyl tube. Clearance out back is only really suitable for road or non muddy conditions; but way more than that Cervelo.
