Gravel Riding Chit Chat

I don’t know what internal/external means. There’s center lock and 6 bolt rotors. The 303s are center lock. Do long as you get the right diameter disk rotors then they should fit your frame?

Have you looked at my link?

Its wheel specific and new wheels will come with which ever CL ring you need. When it comes to buying discs they are all the same as long as you buy CL ones. They don’t come in internal/external flavour. The only issue you may have is if you have the correct tool to do up the locking ring. It looks like, internal = regular shimano cassette spline tool. External = some other tool.

Bottom bracket tool :+1:t3:
I’ve got both tools. In multiple :face_with_peeking_eye::joy:

GOT IT NOW :heart_eyes::heart_eyes::heart_eyes:
Internal = cassette lock ring tool
External = bottom bracket tool :white_check_mark:

Cheers :heart_eyes:

As for 180mm :exploding_head:
I’ve been toying with the idea of Euro brakes (right hand rear) as I find I can get WAY more control on descents using my rear brake as the main brake and the front for bringing me to a stop.
If that rear brake is also on my right hand, which is my main hand, then even more control … plus I could also change gear whilst braking (for this downhills into 33% uphills!)

So I think 160mm is fine for now :white_check_mark:

Ah I see. 303s hubs are external center lock then. They require a Shimano BB tool (or equivalent) to cinch down the lock ring to 40Nm.

Mad to think they’ve actually THOUGHT about making life easier!

Your bike might well not take 180. I’m just lucky that Spesh set out the Diverge front brake bracket mount in a strange way so you can flip the supplied 140/160 bracket to actually give you 160/180. But I do now have un matching front and rear discs styles (they’re both shimano ice tech though) which you’d hate :joy:

I thought general consensus was that most braking should be done via the front? On big decents I’m usually pulsing both, dependent on how loose the surface is.

:joy::joy::joy:

They even give you the BB tool when you buy a Shimano Bb now :white_check_mark:

They’re plastic, but people were over-tightening them. They don’t need to be that tight :joy:

@sowler - yeah, Im not getting 180mm on my front, as the clearance isn’t enough to switch the bracket round. As for braking - I’ve been trialling it out on and off road and have found I can go much faster :white_check_mark:

Whats the cracic with areo bars for Gralloch? I’m not saying mine will stay on but wanted to know if they were banned or not. Best answer I could find was they were fine.

Also does anyone offer single event day insurance like the BTF do?

I don’t have a clue? I thought it was only Pros at Unbound that aren’t allowed them, but this is UCI they may well like to flex & make up their own rules :man_shrugging:.

Have you contacted them?

My parent’s live about 30mins from GoF so that’s my digs.

A couple of years ago I’d have offered up a room but my Mum is in the early stages of Alzheimers so things are getting more difficult.

I think your right, as in they are allowed. They’ll likely be coming off for this. As its quite an undulating route.

Appreciate the thought on the place to stay. I’ll be coming in the campervan so was more in reference if anyone else was doing that where they were staying.

Having had another review of the route vs what time I rode 30km before eating gravel when I did Devon Grit vs the cut off times, I’d agree they are quite punchy!

Any interest? Not far from Poet’s homeland, the gravel ride rather than the duathlon

My brothers LIVE FOR Dalby Forest :deciduous_tree::evergreen_tree::deciduous_tree:

I span the car last time I went on the way out :face_with_peeking_eye:

I’m riding 225km to Southport and back that day (also same day as the Southport Triathlons) … which is where I am now, trying out a fish and chip stop for 50 odd cyclists :yum::drooling_face::heart_eyes:

I note that the Stonehaven Beer Festival has a added gravel route to its road sportives. Albeit only a short one. At least you’ll be back to enjoy the beers.

For any southern TT’ers interested Stonehaven is on the train line and logistics are easy assuming you can get a bike booked on the train.

First time out on my newly acquired gravel bike.

Ignore the mudguard and pedals, it is exactly as I picked it up, so changes will be needed.

Immediate thoughts are that the big tyres are much more suited to the muddy lanes around here than the 26mm ones on the Cervelo.

I can see me doing the bulk of my riding on this thing.

Could probably get that stem higher, get it fitting @GRamsay :joy::face_with_peeking_eye:

Nice work :white_check_mark::+1:t3:

Yeah, it’s set up for a lady, who must have ridden it about twice in the three years she had .

Mudguards need to come off- causing toe overlap.

Pedals are just some old DX spuds I had lying around, they will go.

Bars are way too narrow for me, so they need to change.

But most importantly I have just done 40 miles on a ladies specific saddle- Ready for my gender reassignment now, sudocrem isn’t cutting it.

Thought I’d better have a look at the cut-offs :face_with_monocle:

Wel, that is a bit tight for us oldies :grimacing: . Why the 40min gap between waves 2 & 3?

Doesn’t seem equitable. I’m skipping it this year. If it’s a success and if it runs next year I may do it then.

The younger bunch only get 5 mins more! They are banging on about road closures or something on FB and have also said they don’t plan on being super strict with those times. I really don’t get the massive gap. Maybe in the hope the first two waves are suitably broken up and there is less carnage?
