Gravel Riding Chit Chat

How do I know what paths are cyclable? Is it just those “horseways”?

Erm? A bike :person_facepalming:t4:

I’d seen this a while back, but no route
Hopefully (when I read it) the full route is available?

Although, having spoke to folks who’ve done KAW, South Downs Way, Mary Townley Loop etc, a lot of it isn’t really suited to a gravel bike or even an MTB :exploding_head::cry::triumph:

Looks really good :white_check_mark:

I’ve got a decent Sheffield to Stockport off road route (about 100km) via the reservoir roads and back via skirting the A628 paths :white_check_mark:

But this looks great!
Pretty sure there’s a train from me to the start, too :face_with_peeking_eye:

Last minute summer adventure :exploding_head:

The photos on the leaflet say it all :joy:

Hike a bike sections.

Its a VERY lumpy route. 2000m in the first 80km is alot! Even the MTB boys on singletrackworld are saying its lumpy!

Not even gonna plan a shorter revised tour of the one you planned @Poet ?

@LordFlasheart have you found much gravelle around your parts since you moved?

Since I’ve started investing some money in my Canyon, I should probably ride it outside when it’s sorted. Would be good to meet-up; even if it’s just the Canal and environs near the River, which I alikened to ‘Glos Flanders’ with the exposed flats and little kick-ups along the ridge.

No , not really, but to be honest while it’s a gravel bike I have been treating it much more like a more flexible road bike; all of the traffic free roads around here are pretty rough with lots of gravel rocks and debris but you couldn’t really call it actual gravel.

I have done parts of the canal path but the problem is that a lot of the time at weekends it is full of fishermen who seem to believe they own the path.

But yeah would be up for a ride out at some point, I do keep meaning to do the black shed all the way through to Gloucester.

Don’t you tell them a real man would fish in the sea or a river

I am going to buy a gravel bike for my commute and I reckon I will ride more often throught he winter, outdoors I mean, if I am off-road. I fancy a Giant Revolt* but not sure whether getting the carbon one over the alu one is worth it. It will be bought through the cycle2work scheme so the cost difference is less of a factor. What are the thoughts of you guys who ride gravel bikes already?

*This is assuming the LBS can get the bikes.

My only thought would be be the abuse a carbon frame would take, commuting and off roading in winter. But if you’re minted init, why worry

My Alu boardman CX frame was (cosmetically) trashed by the commute over many years; mainly locking it up and getting blown about in the wind in the bike shed.

Bikes at our work are all indoors. If like my old place they were outdoors in all weathers then I wouldn’t even consider an expensive bike.

haha not minted it’s just with the scheme it becomes much more affordable.

I quite like the look of the steel Orros for shit road commuting.

Sean was really happy with his Orro bikes during the 102, @Poet may provide a more critical review of his.

I was going to get the steel model.
But they dropped the price of the carbon one so I bought that instead.

It’s a right hotch potch of parts, though :sob:
Like a crappy FSA crankset instead of GRX600 (everything else is GRX600)

Bottom bracket is press fit, which is crap.
I’m just about to put in my THIRD one in a year :exploding_head:
Also on my second headset.
I really need to get a conversion kit for the BB and do an external threaded.

Stack height is fookin’ huge!!!
There is a 0% chance of getting “down” on it, as it’s practically upright.

Saddle is also garbage - in all of my years of riding, ever, I’ve never had a saddle this uncomfortable.

It also feels LLLOOOONNNNGGG - like if I’m going uphill and seated, the front end wants to lift up :exploding_head: my weight never feels distributed correctly whilst climbing :person_shrugging:t3:

I bought the size down from what they recommended, wish I’d gone another size down :face_with_peeking_eye: Although, I do like my bikes slightly small, with loads of seatpost and a long stem, I just find they feel much more “nimble” then - like I can throw them into corners more (if that makes any sense?)

It feels light, but also solid. I’d take it anywhere and not be worried - I’ve pointed it down broken brick roads and it copes well.

I’d buy it again. As nothing comes close to the spec for the price. Just make sure you’re actually getting the advertised spec and not being fobbed off with some FSA Gossamer crap, when you think you’re getting Ultegra etc.

Like that link appears to be full GRX600, but they’ve swapped out the rotors and cassette for cheapo versions.

The end.

Carbon all day. Alu is stiff as hell in comparison. And when your riding rough stuff you’ll notice it.

Pretty much knew someone would be doing a FKT this weekend - weather has been far too grim for me.

But we’ll done to her - is there a segment link fella?
