It was my own fault for not getting ready in time :joy: tbf, whoever it was didn’t particularly swim right over me and was having to do a fair bit of weaving.

It’s partly why I’m not a fan of multi-lap courses, it’s hard for both the fast and slow swimmers, if you are swimming fast you can come up on a slow (or stopped) swimmer very quickly and get a decent whack to your head yourself, and the last thing any non-confident swimmer wants is people flying past them really.

Think that’s the most interesting thing that jumps out. Seems big difference for what was essentially a bumpy but dream TT course with one gradual long hill in that first 45km? Considering I was around 5W difference AP NP.

Question to all for advice:
Is lower VI better at saving legs, or is it sometimes better to do power spikes to get over small hills and maintain speed?

Yup!
My cadence down the A66 was approximately ZERO as I saw my life flash before my eyes, as I sure as hell could not see where I was going :wink:
I just could not get into any semblance of rhythm.

We also got stuck behind the Green 555 bus and the Fussels red and white bus, whilst they could not overtake a fair number of slower cyclists, so I had a massive drafting/easy section.

For my Cotswold 113 pre-race rides, I was doing 2-4 hours at a VI of 1.01-1.03 on the local TT courses, which are about as flat as tomorrow’s Tour stage :wink:

But…I’d baulk at the idea of doing 2 hours at 270W, but yesterday’s effort was absolute token.

On a fine day, my NP on that course could quite easily be higher than my FTP, all I’d need to do is push up the first climb, don’t freewheel the A66 and descent part to Ambleside, then push up The Struggle and pedal on the Kirkstone Pass descent…but then I do think my FTP isn’t right?

But, I’d always target a VI of close to 1 as possible to save the legs, yes.
Just I am a heavier guy with a low FTP, so find it super hard to stay under FTP whilst climbing.

Epic. Clocked Mark … sorry Adam on the bike, well his Number then him. I’ve never raced in conditions so dangerous because of the rain. :man_facepalming: Especially the 66 wtf. Turned off the 66 and a bus was turning just in front of us so was stuck behind that. Didn’t use my visor at all as I couldn’t see. I honestly thought coming into T2 they’d stop it, had to go out on the run mind.

NP 263 which wasn’t far off what I expected
Prob about 79 kgs I usually race at 75

4hr 27 min. Was aiming for 4:15 to 4:20 but in those conditions I’m glad to be back home alive.

If you ever think you could easily hold a 2hour NP above your FTP then yes surely FTP is well out? :thinking:

But rest of the explanation makes sense if long periods of free-wheeling on the A66 and behind traffic.

Looks like you all pushed up Struggle more than me. I lost a few riders close to me about half way up and looking at my HR it did dip a bit before I hit the final climb.

Looking at my run, HR dropped after the first climb so I should have tried to push on more there. First 3.5km HR was around 150, then 140s over the top, then 130s down the other side. I just couldn’t get my stride going on the terrain.

Gotta say, fair play to Brownlee for doubling up after Hamburg, I read somewhere on social that his flight didn’t land until midnight! And there is some video of him properly running up the top of Swirral Edge :open_mouth:

The long swim was probably worth between 3-6 minutes at least, never mind the conditions.

So looking at this, what do you need to do to get an elite/professional license, as it seems this is quite a bit easier to get than other sports - There are current world champions that don’t meet British Cycling’s rules for it.

And does that rule mean Hellvellyn was an event of international significance?

No, it means Hamburg was an event of international significance

Don’t you ‘just’ need to be within 15% of the pro winner’s time at a significant race to qualify for a pro licence? Or have I just made that up?

Skipper didn’t do hamburg, but yes, obviously it would have been Challenge Davos, but surely it’s better if we say Helvellyn was the important one!

PTOs definition for this race was within 7% of the ideal Pro time at a 70.3 in the past year.

So pretty stringent.

Much more stringent to get a professional ironman license. Basically think it’s close to having won an AG race, or placed veryvhighly at multiple and within %of Pro?

Think you’re mixing it with BTF criteria for competing for GB internationally as an age grouper.
