just wondering who on here is just deferring until next year ? We are and I certainly hope we get 53 weeks to transfer our flights rather than a year ! As a friend who is doing it said, at least 2021 will be cheap as we have already paid for everything (including our ultimate half and an earlier sportive in Belgium). My target will be to lose the weight I am currently piling on snacking on biscuits and cake over winter and then deja vu repeat Feb 2020 onwards - Groundhog year. This is assuming the world is still a similar place come the end of the year.
I’ll be deferring for sure. If somehow there are flights this August we’ll be going over anyway to have a bit of a recce. Can cancel the hotel up to a week before so will leave it to the last minute.
Yeah our accommodation isn’t cancellable (unless Airbnb extends their refund offer) so we’re going out in August too if possible, might be nice to do a recce!
I’ve not decided on whether I’m deferring or not yet as the original pre-COVID plan was to move to Australia at the end of the year, that’s still on the cards (job wise) depending on international travel opening up.
Currently waiting for the 5th May announcement to see what the final options will be, not holding my breath for anything drastically different though.
Any favourites from Estonia, Kazakhstan or South Africa? I’m sticking with straight deferral as previously planned
The options are listed below.
-
Free deferral to the 2021 IRONMAN Copenhagen: August 22, 2021
-
Free transfer to IRONMAN Kazakhstan: August 23, 2020*
-
Free transfer to IRONMAN Tallinn: September 05, 2020*
-
Free transfer to IRONMAN African Championship: November 15, 2020*
A nice random selection there!
Kind of screws people who thought they could pick any event to defer to
The South African race has already been moved from April?!
Can’t see many if any taking the Kazak, Estonia races on as there’s likely to be little or no training time for that sort of distance while so much of Europe is on restricted movement, let alone the chances of flights.
Going to stick with deferring to 2021
IM have offered to let me transfer to IM Western Aus (if I want to) - so think if entry is open and people ask they may be willing.
Copenhagen for us. Western aus is on my list as my brother lives in Perth but I think I might die in the heat. It has been disrupted by shark spotting and Bush fires the past few years. Can’t afford it at the moment but will definitely going on holiday there at some point.
Yeah I signed up for Copenhagen after melting in the heat at Lanza, Nice and Zurich. Not exactly sure why I’m always drawn to hot races when they are not ideal for my fair complexion!
With regards to the sharks, I’m hoping it will give me some motivation to work on my swim so I spend less time in the sea. IIRC they changed the swim course since the shark problem so you don’t swim as far out and go parallel to the beach instead.
Looking increasingly likely that Denmark will move their UK exile end date forwards. We’ve been fretting over what to do with the easyJet credit we effectively have tied up in the flights, as at that point it’ll be too late. EasyJet still doing the free swaps right now (making up the difference). In the end after being appalled at the prices for flights to the canaries in Feb half term, we are off to Majorca come Easter. Means I get to use my bike box allowance which was non-refundable anyway. The only problem now is how to get off the most stuck pedal ever, my single sided vector 2 on my road bike. Got 10 months to think about it, mind!
SAS are offering free re-booking but at the moment the latest date you can swap to is August 16 next year, no use yet but hopefully the dates will push back the longer this goes on
Yes we were thinking that the deals might suddenly end once August 2020 flights are officially allowed again, and as we were flying with easyJet their change fees can be ridiculous…for all 5 of us…
Any accommodation ideas? Was going for danhostel but currently extortionate for family of 5. Got a booking for steel hotel sorted and tbh for the family looks great, but I’m not even sure I can open my bike bag in there, rooms are tiny. Fine if nothing else, I will deal with it, but thought I’d throw it to the hive mind…
Unfortunately diverting for a week afterwards to Venice for an actual family holiday (rather than this glorified ego trip) has blown the budget for sure…just wondered if anybody who has been there has any suggestions for , basically, massive family friendly room accommodation at a cheapish price in the middle of an expensive city?! Might be impossible…especially now cabinn city and danhostel appear to be significantly more expensive.
Ps yep I know there’s Airbnb but worried that I’ll pick a wrong ‘un and be stranded…
Thanks for any contributions. It’s a mightily tall ask…
Pretty sure Stenard was there last year and might have gone down the apartment route, but of course I could have got that wrong!
@chickenboy did Copenhagen too
hi, i’ve stayed in copenhagen a few times with family of 5 and always drop into Stay apartments on islands brygge.it still isn’t that cheap, £1400 for a week, but the apartments are pretty big, and its quiet. There’s a bakery and supermarket below which saves on the inevitable expensive restaurants. We always hire bikes for the week as its about a mile-ish from the finish line and centre. if you’ve got littl’uns then this might be the deal breaker, it’s a long walk for little legs. I’ll be there next year too.
Thanks. They’ll be 8 and 10. Not so little but bloody grumpy. I fear our budget ceiling is way lower than that…Place we’ve booked is £700!!
Seems like a bargain in some respects, has a cinema, near Tivoli park etc. Rave reviews up the wazoo. Bearing in mind for IM Wales I booked wrong sized caravan and had to exchange places with eldest son at 3am this is probably still an upgrade…
But still…
Can’t help wondering if we could do better!
And get somewhere I could actually open the bloody bike box!!!
