Good to hear that @davem made it down the donkey track in 1 piece
Andy looking consistent on that run and on track for sub4 run leg.
Dave has surpassed both predictions for swim and bike, and on track to beat his power walk target …it’s the transition targets he’s missed
Come on lads.
Should be plenty of pissheads yelling encouragement by now. Are ‘The Pirates’ still attending?
It’s the getting the bike and walking back up the hill that’s the most unpleasant!
37 minutes between 1st and 5th places in men’s race
She’s done it again in 9h59 to win by 7min
There are some over there supporting but not sure if any are racing.
Great time for Lanza top work that man
Well done @davem (16:11 well inside target)
Hope you managed a couple of celebratory drinks afterwards?
Well done both!
What a course. Always feel like I’m not pulling my weight when I miss this race, would be regular attendee in my dream retirement.
Well done Andy and Dave
well done on finish gents
Great going sirs.
Long day at the office
I really need to sharpen up my transitions
Given my complete lack of run training, will take that.
Quick synopsis
Swim, back to the 2 lapper. Found clear water most of the way. Enjoyed it.
T1. Par for the course. Spent far too much time talking bollox and not focused on the job in hand.
Bike. Wind was very light for the first couple of hours. 3 poo stops. Must say, they are on top of keeping the portaloos in good order!
Didn’t enjoy the out and back sections, but get why the organisers have to do something to get the distance in.
Legs still fairly fresh for last bit… and no major dramas this year
T2. Not sure why it was 16 minutes. Apart from comedy moment trying to put K tape on and it sticking to itself rather than my achilles!
Figured a jog:shuffle:walk approach for first half would give me time to power walk the second.
Quick check at half way, confirmed it and mainly walked the second half. Achilles held up, but have some corking blisters this morning!
Fifth Lanzo. 4-1 on finishes.
Brits 1st and 3rd in M45-49
This is the second time I’ve been to Lanza - the last time being 10 years ago when as a sprightly 40 year old , I attempted to smash the bike leg and then surprised when I detonated at 10 miles into the run and suffered for a 14:27 finish.
This time I’d do it properly, ride to numbers, and hopefully get the sub 4 run that I coveted. I’d also like to be under the 13 hour mark if I could help it, and if possible beat my Austria time of 12:51 from 2011. So not a lot of numbers and forecasting going through my head then …
Swim : Lovely, nice temp and easy to navigate. I did 1:22 in 13’ , 1:23 this morning so about right. Convinced it was long by one bouy but time was ok. Got punched just the once, did see lots of fists though and it’s like people have read that swims a biffy and it’s the thing to do - clowns
Bike : bike was heavy, I need to sort that for Roth, covered all angles, had 750 ml in the nose cone with 4 ph tabs in there, and quarter bottle of coke to kill anything from the swim. Watts target on the flat, and then a ceiling for the climbs, I was aware of being passed but stuck to the plan, it’s not a flat and fast bread and butter dual carriageway , and I was always going to get found out on the climbs. Still able to spin the legs after Del Rio , and started taking places back from people who were out of matches. Sub 7 by just 20 seconds and in a good state to start the run.
Run
Brilliant, mentally broke it down into three sections which was useful as it’s 3 loops First out and back was 14 miles and change and I knew if I could pace that ok I was in with a shout. Kept ph salt with me and remembered to take them every 3 miles. So half marathon done in 1:54 , then the battle began as the heat started to wear on me and the gluten I’d consumed. I farted my way through the second loop, with slower and slower stops at the aid stations - not a lie down or anything but noticed I would take extra time. Third loop I didn’t think I’d do it until I got to the airport turn and realised I had 30 mins to do a Parkrun. Those last three miles picked it up again and managed to get a little quicker going back to PDC. Finished in 12:39, with a 3:58 run.
Loved the event, it was so tough and clearly the work of an evil genius, especially that second time to Teguise and the very late out and back to Tinajo which has to be the brainchild of a serial killer
Five weeks now til Roth, then 10 weeks to Wales, first one done and dusted.
Great effort. Tracker had you at pretty much even pace (for an Ironman) on the run, which is a thing to behold after that bike.
Well done Andy. Awesome performance
Sorry I didn’t recognise you as you whizzed past!
I take it that your nearest and dearest insist you are permanently in therapy for the self-loathing and masochism then?
Andy well done great effort and a sensible strategy executed well. Mental strength to hold back and ride to target which paid off when you needed to push the last part of the run. Top job
Thanks for the reports
