really ???
TBH I think that CLS will be less wedded to the IM with Kenneth not actively involved in it anymore.
I’ve done Lanza 6 times between 2008 and 2018 and there seemed to be far fewer IM participants staying at CLS in 2018 than there was in 2008. CLS always used to run a bus service to take people across to PDC for a practice swim every morning in the race week. In 2008 they had 20+ people going across most days. By 2018 there was just a handful of us going across so they just stuck us in a taxi. There always used to be a big group from City of Lancaster Tri that stayed at CLS and did the race. I think they were still racing in 2018, but they were staying elsewhere.
The IM represents a big cost investment for the Danish owners of CLS. If they find it’s not driving guest occupancy then they might decide it’s not worth the expense
well put
i doudt i would ever do the Lanza full again ,Nothing to do with the race itself .But feel it would be a loss to tri racing and the island £££ if neither took place , even if only 1000 finishers
Just seeing news on FB that IM have withdrawn from Lanza. I hope that it survives, I suspect if they can still hold a closed road race, it will still attract numbers. Lanza was not a big draw for poeple to get the IM Tattoo. I would be more inclined to return if it’s not an Ironman, I wonder if there a quite a few like me?
Haven’t seen that but wonder if Challenge might step in?
if Challenge take over the event, then they have 2 of the 4 most iconic triathlon events, Kona and Nice being the other 2 (we can debate this)
I’d probably agree with that, at least until IM Blackpool gets sorted
My guess is that CLS didn’t want to stump up the IM license fee.
It would be a real shame if the race disappeared from the calendar completely. I don’t know how profitable the race is for the island as a whole. It’s dependent on a lot of government support to police the road closures and a race with 1000 people isn’t going to bump the visitor numbers up that much, if at all, unless they moved the race to a date completely out of the tourist season
Ok well that saves me from prentending Im going to do it.
Shame though, one of the originals and still the best.
I’ve just seen this…
…and this is a google translation of the article.
Maybe there is still hope or it’s just marketing delays whilst they strike a deal with Challenge or whoever.
‘After COVID everything has changed’ at the risk of a can of worms, are they joking? The west is pretending it never happened and nothing has changed whatsoever.!.!.!
Good to hear negotiations are ongoing though. Losing UK Staffs and Lanza as well would be too much to ignore
Be a shame if both races do not carry on ,just glad i have done both of them when they at their peak !!
all those that have not done it or kept putting off “its your lose”
Wait, I totally missed that IMUK is going to be no more .
The idea of doing an IM in the UK never really appealed (IM is a hot weather sport, right? ), but it’s a shame that it’s not going to be there for anyone who wants to do it.
Were numbers dropping?
Read the last few hundred comments on the 2023 race thread
Massive amount of people missed the bike cutoff this year, weather didn’t help but also a savage course on crap roads. But very reduced registrations as well.
So, probably because of legal reasons it’s a 70.3 next year at least.
Until they find a suitable route around Blackpool
There is of course Tenby and you might also include Cork.
lanzarote ?
bit like xmas
Someone on SlowTwitch apparently has spoken to CLS and they said they are wrapping up negotiations with Ironman and will announce dates soon.
really great news
,for all wanting to do it & lanzarote
