Yeah, but the one three months earlier isn’t the World Championships.
Some people will see that as funny but it is the whole point isn’t it? It costs more to go to a WC for the field not the venue, otherwise these folk would sign up for Hawaii 70.3 and who does that?
I wonder if that’s in part because of the location of the roll down ceremony?
It’s at CLS, so probably not too many people turning up just in the off-chance
Yes that is a good point, unless you happen to be staying there for the race (which would be a pain logistically). I don’t recall them laying on a bus to take you there either, like there was for registration.
Mrs W loves CLS, so we’ve stayed there for each of the 6 times I’ve done IM Lanza.
Logistically it’s a bit of a pain having to get the bus over for racking the afternoon before the race, but the race day buses work really well and your bike gets magically transported back to CLS after the race (although my Garmin 1000 did go “missing” in transit in 2015 ).
Maybe slot allocation should be a online thing & maybe only roll down to top 25% finishers within each age group ( not that i finish within that group all the time) that way if you finish in the top 25% in AG worth turning up to allocation also keep “championships” just that .be interesting to see how far they roll down in races for 70.3 champs in NZ
just a thought
I think they’re struggling with the slots for Finland due to lack of accommodation
IM love the drama of the slot roll down.
It would make much more sense to do it online
strange neither the 70.3 or Full have races dates yet !
Was their 5 year license up for renewal after this year’s race?
seem to think it was either this year or last year ? , just strange thy both not got dates yet
oh well will have to wait & see ( even though i not doing it again )
On holiday over here and took a mountain bike from la Santa to Famara. We can be very glad the IM course no longer goes this way. This was the nice bit as well. Horrible even with bloody front suspension.
That road used to be like velvet!
They re-routed the race one year to go round there because it was closed for resurfacing, but that was maybe 2009, so I guess the wind hasn’t been kind to the surface over that time
Is that Soo down to Famara? Once one of the worst surfaces on the island (went to La Santa multiple times without ever bothering to go to Famara as a result) then miraculously resurfaced beautifully, now appears in need of a refurb. Once was heading down to Famara early morning and we came upon a camper van that had rolled into the lava field off that road. Fortunately there were a load of military medics on our bike week and they took control until the ambulances arrived.
We did a MTB route around the coast but the photo I posted was from the right part of the map shown. But yes, on a road bike it would have been from Soo to Famara and just as you are about to turn inland from Famara beach and head towards Teguise.
that section was always dodgy on the orginal course .often mini sand dunes on the road made more difficult by a fed station there too
Email just received from IM about 2024 races no mention of 70.3 or Full IM on Lanza ?
any inside info about
I got the same email, interesting that they’re offering the flex90 for 70.3 events, I’m guessing they’ll be increasing in cost as well, and probably the same as a full Ironman was in 2019!
The Lanza page did suggest entries were opening soon for 2024 so I’m not sure it’s gone just yet, but you never know.
I messaged them on Instagram on Monday they came back and said still working on a date. No date for the 70.3 either yet obvs run by CLS maybe protected from the drop in Numbers ?
