Maybe Im not THAT old
Velcro shoes are the way forwardâŚ
The tale of woe with my running;
2020 - 900 miles
2021 - 600 miles
2022 - 600 miles
2023 - 400 miles
2024 - 130 miles
Constant list of injuries - but the last few years plagued with a hip (flexor?) issue. Very different to every other injury Ive had. Didnt ever trigger till I was running and they only after a certain time. Initially I could stretch it out but over time that had little impact.
Tried a few times during 2024 including a really sensible slow build up almost couch to 5k style - but I could still feel it coming on.
Randomly tried a different stretch and suddenly I can run 20+ mins. Nearly 27 today (albeit on treadmill). It feels a bit niggly and tired -but the feeling of actually being able to open the stride again is a welcome return.
Can only hope this is the turning point⌠I âquitâ running so many times last year; but I really dont want to give it up for good.
I woke up looking this, assuming Mrs FP didnât smack me one in the night, burst blood vessel? It doesnât hurt.
Apart from that, FMD I look old these days.
Iâm sure Iâve seen that face on Crimewatch!!
I was quite shocked how I look. To the point where I was thinking âwhoâs that in the picâ?
I get that too, when I catch my reflection unexpectedly sometimes and I just donât realise itâs me for a second.
What was this miraculous stretch? Asking for all the injured.
Gave up on lace-up shoes a while ago. Slip-ons far easier-quicker. Lacing up the hiking boots is a real drag on the occasion the weather is such that I need to wear them. Once trainers get âoldâ Iâll start slipping them on and off as well, only retying the laces when theyâre not tight enough. Iâm such a lazy-ass!
Weirdly just knee to chest whilst lying down. Iâve done so many variations of hip flexor stuff (and Iâm sure I did this with physio before). But I can almost feel during the stretch when I really pull the knee in; feels like things clunk back into place.
Maybe the combination of many months off has allowed things to heal and now incorporating that ⌠dont quite understand but Im not arguing.
Not an injury, but got the DOMS big time today from doing that oly yesterday. Poor old crock. Actually it could be from the squash on Thursday night. Either way, take me round the back and shoot me
Was doing military presses earlier. 35kg, which is someway off my best but I am still getting back into things. It felt heavy and hard.
Into my 3rd set and my shoulder was hurting, same one I injured before. For once in my life I did the right thing and stopped.
Odd things is, there is no pain now and moving my arm and around and having a prod there is no pain at all. Maybe it was just tight and the heavy weight was giving it a bit of grief.
Will rest and see. Really dont want an injury putting me back.
Getting quite annoyed now. Was meant to do an easy 20km road run but you know those runs where either it doesnât feel but starts to click or it doesnât start right and just gets worse?
It was the latter Got 3km in and knew it wasnât happening , I just walked home.
I just canât seem to get any breath, not in that Iâm gasping but itâs just ânot rightâ. Calf was going tight and my back was very jarring today. Absolutely nothing working in synch.
Iâve always said I have a good engine but just carry too much weight, not even sure about the engine these days.
Shit!
Iâve been were you are ⌠we all have at some stage or other.
Muscles, legs, backs can all be sorted with physio, stretching, rest etc
The breathless part ( I know you mentioned it during your park run) could be anything but in your position Iâd get that checked out FP.
Hope it all mends up quick, you have those crazy crazy ultra runs to come
Sorry to hear that FP, hoping everything sorts itself out soon.
Have you had any checkups recently? Maybe worth getting your lungs or heart checked out. Just a thought.
Edit: just basically repeated what you said @Mungo2 âŚtip to myself, always read the posts aboveđ¤Śââď¸
As the others have set get checled, but also how much rest have you had recently? Both from running and managing stress?
I feel like you and I are similar, we set our goals and targets and nothing is going to get in the way.
Years back I was training hard. Really focused on swimming as was trying to break 5.45 for a 400m (only made 5.51 grr). I reached a point where it was all going to shit. I couldnt hit the beeps on any set and was way off pace.
Spoke to my coach and he said take a week off, try again, if its still bad take 2 weeks off.
I was bloody hard to do but ultimately its what worked and what I needed.
Go get some tests done - especially for things like atrial fibrillation. Whatâs happening with you is how I felt in 2017 - go for a run or ride and as soon as the legs needed to work harder such as a hill, they just said fuck off. I thought it was either my age (I was 64) or lack of mojo but no - it was AF. And I only found out when I had a minor stroke. I missed all the signs - one of which is some dizziness when either getting up from a flat prone position flat on your back, or laying down. I just ignored that one.
You can test for AF easily if you have a smart watch - my Apple watch has an app. If you donât have one someone you know might so you can use that.
Thanks all, some really good advice. I had the NHS check up before Xmas where they flagged the abnormally low HR and followed up with an ECG. I was meant to have that echo cardio scan with a specialist early this year but the blood test that the Dr ordered came back normal, so they canned it.
I wonder if itâs worth going private? The dizziness is something new, I donât get it standing up (very rarely anyway) but Iâve noticed i definitely benefit from sitting on the bed for a few seconds before standing up.
The light headedness at the start of Parkrun continues but that passes. Everything is so random lately, between Xmas and NY I ran a 23.38 at Burnham. but struggled to finish the last couple at Winchester!
Stress wise, yes a bit full on. Work is not any better but bearable. We are dealing with some stuff at home again at the moment (LO is having some bullying issues again but itâs not catastrophic or anything). I think Iâm carrying quite a load but I donât step back and consider the accumulated effect of this, just tend to deal with things in isolation.
I think I tend to regard rest days ad days that Iâm not training but thinking about it, I just fill the day with other stuff which is less than restful.
Life hey?
I hate bullying, hope things get better for LO and you soon
So, the implant has been implanted. On day 4 and feeling ok, just the implant area feels a bit sore around the sutures, as expected really.
Had some problems with bleeding the first 36 hours, had to return to my dentist after 24 hours, because a huge liver clot had developed and the area wasnât healing. He put in some more stitches, applied pressure, added some more stitches, asked if I had Von Willebrand disease, to which the answer was: ânot that I know ofâ, applied more pressure and sent me home biting down on a swab for a couple of hours. The bleeding stopped, only to start again after i ate something and cleaned my mouth. This time I was prepared, more biting down on a swab and finally by the evening the bleeding stopped and hasnât returnedâŚtouch wood, as they say. Got an awful headache from all the biting down, drilling and chiselling, but thatâs gone now too.
Stitches come out next Tuesday, shouldnât do sport for 2 weeksâŚI can imagine jogging will feel uncomfortable beforehand, but some walking might be ok. Not sure about climbingâŚmaybe start with some really easy top-roping.
