Injury List- do any parts of you still work?

Been getting some shoulder pain for the last few months, nothing mega but it seems to be getting worse and is particularly painful if I lie on that side.

Decided to go though my work health insurance as I think I get physio for free. Had to do an online assessment (Ai I presume) with various movement etc but it was really tricky as the pain is a bit random. I can do the same movement and sometimes it hurts and sometimes it doesn’t. Length of time in a position seems to be more of a factor than the position itself.

If I had to guess I’d say it’s some kind of impingement rather than a muscle tear or strain.

I’ve clearly eaten something that’s not agreed with me…..

My groin is being pretty stubborn, it is very slowly getting better, sometimes it is no problem, then can be sore rather than painful if I’ve sat down for a while or tried rolling it etc., during the parkrun yesterday I didn’t feel it but I think that’s probably the brain pain override, it was sore afterwards but not limping painful and isn’t bad today.

But I’ve looked back at when I had similar issues in the past, 4 years ago almost to the day it started with a sore groin that was going into the stomach, illiacus\psoas areas. I kept going for a bit with reduced training but clearly it was wasn’t helping so eased right back.

Both times (almost a 4 year cycle that I’m just starting!) I ended up with pretty much 3 months of no running and promised myself I wouldn’t get into the same cycle and mindset again as it is just running the body into the ground. The only bonus the second time is that it was Q1/2021 and we were in lockdown with no races or anything.

So, I’m going to try and get into the physio for some kind of assessment this week, as a couple of times I’ve had what he described as a loose bit of cartilage or something in the joint which gets inflamed and doesn’t help, and hopefully find out what it is.

If necessary I’ll try not running until Christmas and see how that goes, I’ll keep up the cross training and cycling if they feel alright.

Really need to get it settled and accept I won’t be racing well at the start of the year.

Foot is still totally fuk’d

See over 50s thread… fell down stairs last Thursday as in 23rd October

Hoping I might be able to do a jog walk by next weekend.

Bike was okay for 5 - 7 days but now the swelling has come down protecting it, cycling is making it worse.

Had to cut yesterdays bike short and even an easy 2hr spin wasnt possible today. Cutting it short it is feeling better than the last few days this afternoon, hopefully it will improve over the next few days.

Lordy - swimming has become the last resort?

Ha.

Would be but. No it isn’t… pressure on the foot swimming is the worst. Same when I did my ankle.

Would be nice as it would be a good excuse to focus on swimming :man_swimming: err drowning / not drowning.

Well that was a good start to the day - not.

Was taking the dog for a walk and got down to the main road to step up on the pavement - boot slipped on the wet kerbstone and down I went like a sack of spuds. Head went straight into the estate sign post although I did manage to brace with my arms from something worse.

Split forehead and badly grazed knees so not long back from Minor Injuries at Brecon with 7 stitches in the head gash. Marvellous.

Still there sadly. Probably not have been as bad if it had been wood - but metal and head is not a good combo. Thank feck I’ve got a hard bonce or it could have been a lot worse.

MIU at Brecon advised me to go to A&E to get a CT scan ‘cos I’m on anticoagulants so there was the possibility of a brain bleed. Feck that - it’s an hour’s drive away - I’d take my chances but do so if I experienced any wooziness or sick feeling.

As it happens I’ve been feeling fi………..

Imagine what the sign must be like!

Put it this way - if the metal sign hadn’t been there then the stone wall behind it would have been. I think smooth metal was a better option to cause damage rather than rough stone!!

The AI assessment I did was inconclusive so I had to speak to a physio on the phone, nice chap from Sunderland, who asked me some more questions and then gave me the option of carrying on with him remotely or seeing someone local in person. I took the local option as I think hands on is better with something like this and he booked me a slot in a week’s time. In the meantime he sent me a link to their app with some exercise he’d prescribed me to do in the mean time.

2nd day of doing the exercises I felt a slight pop and a warm sensation in my shoulder and it’s been 90% better since. Didn’t want to cancel the appointment incase it came back again and I had to start from scratch, so went today and she did some physical checks then confirmed it was an impingement and didn’t think there was any muscular damage to the rotator cuff etc.

She’s booked me in again for another 3 weeks time and told me to keep doing the same exercises until then and see how it goes.

She did say no heavy lifting at the gym “no 150/250kg Deadlifts” - 250kg!!!, chance would be a fine thing.

In other news the temperature gauge on my van that packed up has started working again and the outside light that’s been dim for weeks, but I never got round to changing the bulb, has gone bright again.

Clearly, if you ignore things long enough they fix themselves.

Went to the physio this morning about the groin, I think it’s 5 weeks and 3 big races missed since I felt it, probably should have tried to go sooner.

He says it is likely to be the inguinal ligament, but said there was no sign of a hernia as this is one of the main locations for them as there’s a gap for veins, nerves and other stuff to get through it! He explained it a bit better :joy:

Certainly feels like it could be as there’s a lot of tenderness both at the top of the hip and pubic joint where each end attaches, and soreness in the stomach is also related. Whatever it is I’ve had this a few times over the years, I’m not sure if it’s just something I’m susceptible to, weak core, too much footy as a kid.

Anyway, it has been settling down but he said to give it 2-3 weeks of rest and avoid aggravating it, I’m due back in a fortnight. It has been getting better but he even said no cycling as that can compress things with the seat position, swimming probably isn’t great either given the way I twist in that area and have set it off in the past. But things in a straight line aren’t bad and walking is probably good. Also said he could try ultrasound if it doesn’t respond.

I’d pretty much decided to avoid running for a few weeks anyway and was going to see about cycling as that definitely seemed to aggravate things, but I was also going to change the bike seat a bit on the wattbike and put a padded cover on it to see if extra cushioning helped.

Probably not bad timing, I could do with a rest and this lurgy is still making me feel CBA, I might do a few upper body weights if I can avoid pulling at the stomach. But, better to try and get it sorted now than keep making it worse and getting like I have in the past.

The other bonus is that it should help a couple of other niggles to heal as well which were annoying and sore but not enough to make me stop training.

So I can do it all again next year :rofl:

Sounds a bit like a sports hernia (Athletic Pubalgia) that I had…& what I thought @FatPom may have started to develop after his race at the weekend.

Busy area down there, lots of bits going everywhere. Got to be difficult to diagnose by poking, prodding & getting a grumpy northerner to communicate.

He did check for that in some tender areas and got me to cough! He seemed convinced there wasn’t a hernia, I did have one on the other side about 20 years ago, I went to see a specialist and he said it would probably improve without an operation which it did.

It is likely overuse and twisting from running, swimming etc
