Men’s triathlon delayed until Wednesday after the women’s race…. But there’s a thunderstorm warning for this afternoon in Paris so it’s not looking too good. The full announcement is below (all official announcements are here).

Following a meeting on water quality held on 30 July at 3.30am attended by Paris 2024, representatives of World Triathlon and their Technical and Medical Delegates, the International Olympic Committee, Météo France, the City of Paris and the Prefecture of the Île-de-France Region involved in carrying out water quality tests, Paris 2024 and World Triathlon have made the decision to postpone the men’s triathlon event which was due to be held on 30 July at 8am.

Considering the latest weather information, it has been decided to schedule the men’s triathlon event on 31 July at 10h45.

The women’s triathlon is due to take place the same day at 8am. Both triathlons are subject to the forthcoming water tests complying with the established World Triathlon thresholds for swimming. A contingency day remains in place for August 2.

Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that their priority is the health of the athletes. The tests carried out in the Seine today revealed water quality levels that did not provide sufficient guarantees to allow the event to be held.

Unfortunately, meteorological events beyond our control, such as the rain which fell over Paris on 26 and 27 July, can alter water quality and compel us to reschedule the event for health reasons. Despite the improvement of water quality levels over the last hours, the readings at some points of the swim course are still above the acceptable limits.

Updated information regarding tickets and broadcast of the events on Wednesday July 31 will be shared in the next hours.

It really was good. He was calm, took a drink and didn’t start shouting at his mechanics. Very good to see.

If it does go ahead at 10.45, could create a different race as heat may be a factor then.

Olympic duathlon. Might as well just stick them on the track for a 10k run.

A lot of rain predicted for this afternoon and into the night. The water is only going to get worse.

I don’t know how the ‘basin’ thingy works, but overnight showers sounds like a job for it.

Feel bad for the organisers. They played the game, rolled the dice and they lost. Postponement, cancellation, whatever - now the world knows the Seine is a shitshow, which is the opposite of what was intended.

The pigheadedness to have the swim in The Seine is baffling. They’ve known that water quality could be iffy like, forever. Why was there no alternative plan to move it to the rowing venue or any number of other places with stunning, showpiece backdrops?

Having said that, if it goes ahead tomorrow Wednesday works for me as I’m off work.

But if your only plan is “pray it doesn’t rain” you don’t really have a plan

I think the opening ceremony is the ultimate indicator that they just want to show off Paris. Any coastal location would’ve been more beautiful… but it’s not Paris.

I said similar earlier in the thread

In a row with a BTF director. I was once told that Duathlon would never be an Olympic event. My response was ‘not whilst you’re in charge’. Maybe I was wrong

Is it not the case that they wanted the improved water quality to be a legacy of the games? They spent 1.4 billion Euros trying to improve it, I’ve no idea on the details but it seems like a noble cause to get some tangible benefit & nobody wants to host the games these days either.

I quit my role as a TM after a similar shit show in Madrid although I made my decision over the desire to delay communication to the athletes.

At least Madrid was a good warm up exercise for world triathlon
