about 12 years ago, an international event was ‘encouraged’ to proceed with very questionable water quality…in sweden iirc…lots of athletes were ill…one of the female athletes was so ill she never raced again…
It happened at the final of the D1 events in Nice in 2013. Massive deluge during the women’s race, washing all the shite into the sea. Men’s race went ahead. One of the French stars got sick - in hospital for 3 months.
They might get the Seine great in the week before but Paris is prone to a summer deluge too.
quit my BTF role after similar in Madrid…although the swim thankfully did not take place…
even the rats didn’t want to swim in the Campo after the deluge - at least 3 dead ones by the pontoon. made for an interesting weekend all the same!
Yep…made for some rather disappointed people.
A shame coz it was a fab location
Surely they can just got to an Evian factory, or have it wheeled over to Paris, and use one of the massive vats of pure mountain spring water?
@d.t and I did a race last year in Belgium. Huge deluge before into already questionable water.
I was sick for 4 or 5 weeks after. Not as bad as one of the female athletes in her 20’s, she ended up in intensive care.
Menen?
It’s a miracle.
It’s like when races test the water temp and it’s always 0.1C below banning wetsuits. I swear they throw a few ice cubes in a couple of minutes before.
It’s called pragmatism. 22.1 and ban wetsuits and piss an awful lot of people off, or 21.9 and keep people happy? You know the answer.
ETA - (not if it’s a champ event of course)
add the safety aspect in, especially events like London (although wasnt it non wetsuit one year?)
So if the officials want to break the rules it’s pragmatism? But if it’s the competitors it’s cheating and a dq?
You lot are never bloody happy!
Give them all a can of Coke when they come out of the water and they’ll be fine
I’ve heard there might be a way of putting sunlight into the body…they’re gonna look into that.
Test results are still dependent on whether it rains or not - which imo doesn’t seem sufficiently reliable for an Olympic event. Fingers crossed for them.
that’s very true…fingers crossed for it all…
at least we won’t see a boat parked across the race start if it’s a duathlon…
Read today theres a backup plan for the marathon swim, the rowing tank, and potentially tri as well (although date clashes with rowing)
