It seems like Wilde had seen Yee slow down to recover previously and wanted to use that to get the decisive gap. The combined effort of having to make up 20 secs in first 2km then get a 10 sec gap proved too much in the end… As a Kiwi in Oz, I have a tinge of sadness but as a triathlete what a finish… would have liked to have seen the whole thing on coverage rather than be surprised at the passing moment but so be it…

Just catching up here, brilliant men’s MTB. Brilliant camera work but rubbish commentary. As the tension built in that final lap (with the non cyclist next to me also glued to the race), the instant Tom took that left-hand branch you could see him give it absolutely everything, and I just knew he was going to emerge ahead. Top level race mindset. Victor said he didn’t see Tom there, presumably true, but if thinking race tactics on the same level then you’d have to expect Tom to attempt that. However, if Victor had also surged at that point they’d probably have clashed level with each other rather than one wheel apart, and possibly taken each other out.

As I was discussing with motorbike racing pals, it had all the drama of the best last lap in top-level moto racing.

Just found this. I love how a lot of College Aquatic Centers are LCM but have double booms to allow for 2 x 25yd and a bit in middle. Some like ASU (outside) have a SCY pool but another main pool is 50m long and 25yds wide for training LCM/SCY .
Who knows how long these facilities will last though with the new NCAA “revenue sharing” regs.

Can’t find it at the moment, but I’m sure I’ve seen a tumble turn race where they use the small gap between the 2 pools and just keep turning.

Yer, ive seen them do that as well.

It seems odd to me that they’re still building imperial distance pools and racing in yards.

My mate’s daughter is at LSU and he regularly posts links to meets that she’s been racing in and one of her regular events is 500 yard freestyle :man_shrugging:

Why?
He annihilated the competition.
Great race.

ITs just one of those quirks of the NCAA, got to admit its fast, high adrenaline racing; they are doing 17. for 50free!

Swimming scholarship planned for El Niño? :grinning:

Not sure I can afford US schools  Not many scholarships available, (9.9 per swim + dive programme) so most are only part scholarships.

U of Stirling is a decent UK Swim College or Swansea has a programme also, or the usual Bath/Luffbra  much cheaper option lol

Given the way he smashed the WR and the recent history of doping amongst Chinese swimmers, there was clearly an undercurrent of feeling that the win was PED assisted. Listening to the commentators I got the impression they were biting their lips wanting to say something, but not saying it!

over to dope testing and WADA I guess
