But you risk being boxed in on the curb. That was an opportunistic win.
I thought they were making strides to resolve that
They’re shuffling towards closure.
its 2 steps forward 1 step back
I think Hocker had the ‘luxury’ of being able to run for 3rd with anything else a bonus. So he ran on the curb, in the pack, if he gets boxed in he’s confident enough in his finish to be able to get a medal. Kerr runs the race he needs to run to beat Ingebrigtsen, but gets beat by someone who had the race come to them, rather than made the race come to them.
Ingebrigtsen lost the race, Kerr was just beaten by a quicker guy on the day.
Run marginally slower for 1450m then marginally faster for 50m. Like Hocker did
Great race though
I think on the day Hocker was the man most on form, but he definitely got a bit lucky with the way he ran it. Jorgan called it at the time…he goes to hit the inside coming off the final bend and gets blocked. Almost has to stop, and then goes again when Jacob finally moves out to try and disrupt Kerr.
To be able to go, stop, lose ground, and then go again and still out kick everyone says, to me at least, that he just had “it” on the day.
Whilst the Josh and Jacob had pushed a very high pace, Hocker had largely run a similar effort to be within a metre or two at 1300. It wasn’t the sort of situation you often see in 400s where the other two had both pushed so hard early that they have no kick whatsoever, and with 75m to go someone can come from 10+ metres back with a massive surge.
it also seems to be the case that the US are getting their act back together in middle distance running - they had 1st, 3rd and 5th in the 1500m
I missed out on a sub-2 800m back in the day because I got baulked and had to check at 120m to go. The 2 in front were 1:55/1:56 guys and were just messing about, I was hanging on for grim death. They suddenly slowed coming into the home straight, before kicking away in their own race, I had to check, stumbled, and never got back up to pace. 2:00.5 the closest I got.
TLDR of what I was trying to say
Annoying isn’t it? Stay in your lane USA, stick to the sprints. They seem to be doing well at things like hammer too.
Hocker’s sprint reminded me of the uncoordinated kid at school losing his rag in a football game and charging manically about for 2 minutes.
closer than me…
Well, ‘the World’ is becoming bipolar again, so gotta diversify to top the medal table
I’m not sure if I ever quite beat 3 mins
By my mid teens I’d pretty much given up at these long sprints and realised that I much preferred proper running
At training last night the coach said “the 35 milers can go off first” He meant the ones that had run a 35 mile race at the weekend, not the ones that ran 35 miles / week total!
Was Canada that won the hammer in both male and female. US won men’s shot-put though - but to be fair, Crouser’s win was his 3rd Olympic gold on the trot as he’s a class apart. US also got silver in that event.
The 1500 was so focused on two men (and they on each other), it just gave the USA athletes room to breathe without the weight of expectation. When the opportunity arose, Hocker was strong enough to exploit it.
